Stop Playing It Safe!
Goodbye, Tom Gorman, RHS 1987. Hope you resign from the Ridgewood High School Alumni Association as well. As the outgoing Superintendent of Ridgewood Schools, you succeeded in kicking the can down the road and leaving the issue of Later School Start Times (LSST) to your successor, Dr. Leonard D. Fitts. The plan being offered, has been researched for over ten years and deserves more respect than it has been given by you and the Board of Education. Most importantly, it has the full support of the current Ridgewood High School Principal, Jeffrey Nyhuis. He is the man who would be responsible for implementing it and has been involved with the research since the beginning.
I can only surmiss that Tom Gorman suffers from being a product of an educational system which teaches to the test. He appears incapable of thinking about an issue and analyzing the details. This is the most important skill you should acquire in school.
Tom Gorman is not alone. The Ridgewood High School Alumni Association (RHSAA) has a Board of Trustees which acts collectively with a similar do nothing attitude. Its ineffectual approach towards involving RHS alumni living beyond the borders of the Village is below standard and unworthy of their individual abilities.
The RHSAA started as an organization with high hopes and ideals, where the promise was to create a “dynamic online community.” It has degenerated into an institution badly in need of a house cleaning. There are 8 board members who have served for 8 years and their time to move on is at hand. If they cared about the RHSAA they would understand that it would be well served by some new ideas and energetic personalities. The RHSAA needs individuals not afraid to initiate an outreach to the more than 25,000 alumni around the world. The outreach might easily begin by publishing minutes of their monthly meetings, identifying the chairs of committees, and putting some money into the infrastructure of the organization by hiring someone to manage the RHSAA website and regularly updating it. The current board is simply looking after the needs of their own children enrolled at RHS. They do a disservice to the idea of what an alumni association is supposed to be about. Stop playing it safe!

My 3 Janes
Today was the service for my mother - she was 86 and loved life - it was a celebration.
I've been lucky enough to have a few moms.

It might not mean much to you...but to me...its everything's everything

Hiding In The Hollow
We'll hide in the hollow, and
Work the livelong day,
Sit and sip at fall of night, and
Watch the planets play;
We'll pretend our self sufficiency
Will carry our children through
The decades we have left them
To confront a witches brew
Of technological troubles
Staring them in the face
While we bow out of the picture,
Now, let us all say the grace
The frog calls diminuendo
The fireflies lose the beat
The tragedies crescendo
With the rising of the heat
We'll hide in the hollow, and
Work the livelong day,
Wherefore are you Apollo?
While sickness rules the day?
