Fourth Of July Parade
The chairs start to be placed along the 4th Of July Parade route in mid-June. It’s a time honored tradition that nobody takes or moves the chairs, though some people do tie them together to make the idea even less tempting.
By the beginning of July the entire town is filled with beach chairs of every type and variety. Everyone has their favorite spot and people return to the same spaces year after year so friends will know where to look for them during the parade.
There is nothing like a parade, whether you are marching in it or simply watching and waving at the marchers. There are always well-rehearsed bands like the Hawthorne Caballeros, old firetrucks making their annual tour, as well as floats like the ones created out of RHS Graduation Night party decorations.
Another time honored tradition is how the local politicians make good use of the parade to shake a lot of hands. This usually slows the whole parade down to a standstill. When this occurs, somebody will sacastically yell at them to get moving, then with an embarassed grin the parade resumes its winding path through town, ending past the Graydon Pool parking lot on Northern Parkway.
I never saw a Ridgewood 4th of July Parade, no matter how hot the weather, that I didn’t feel better for attending. We don’t often agree upon much in the Village, but a few hours of watching smiling people parade by down normally congested streets is a common bond we all appreciate. It is a shared experience in a world that has fewer and fewer of them. Enjoy the day and find a good place to view the fireworks!

June 28, 2022 - South Street Seaport
Stone Cold Stares
Standing on the north side of the seaport...I stepped down towards the water and looking back there was a glass wall - presumably to stop wind and water and as I did...I saw the west tower of the Brooklyn Bridge in the reflection and the stare of two women beyond the glass who seemed more disturbed and less concerned about immediate safety as I took the shot on the edge of the east river.
Looking south with northerly reflection of west tower and clouds.
Time 645pm.
