Remembering Our Athletic Forebearers
I know full well that all of our athletic forebearers were not angels. Bullies are a part of every group at RHS whether they are social, academic, or athletic. It is a sad fact of life.
Though I do wish the sad sacks in my day, who picked on their fellow classmates, had been exposed to the accomplishments of the members of the Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall Of Fame (RHS HOF). It’s not the same as looking at trophies and old footballs in the glass display cases of the gym. No, the RHSAA provides the commentary at its biennial Inductees Banquet, as well as pictures & biographies on their web site, of how our athletic forebearers conducted themselves in a public school setting. This is far better than simply setting old trophies up in a glass case and telling people to look at them and be impressed!
The RHS HOF provides an excellent illustration on how alumni can give back to their alma mater. They do it without participating in Zoom calls with high school seniors or donating money to RHS for a tax break. No, they set an example by allowing their achievements to speak for themselves. You don’t get into the RHS HOF by being rich or being employed. You are selected after months and sometimes years of consideration by former athletes & coaches, some of whom are members of the RHS HOF.
The analysis of who becomes a member is not all based on comparing athletic statistics either. It is part of a broader review of how the Village operated when the athletes were competing. If you visit the RHS HOF online or at the RHS gymansium you will see among the 2008 inductees the 1922-1923 Girls Basketball Team. Girls’s athletics in the 1920s were not a given like the boys. It took an act of Congress fifty years later called Title IX to make sure girls were given the same access to athletics as the boys, or else Federal Funding would be cut off.
Now we have Girls Golf and Girls Flag Football. Eunae Jo & Julia Rappa of the RHS Class of 2008 are among the 2022 Inductees to the RHS HOF for their peerless performance on the golf links. Someday we might even see a female quarterback inducted into the RHS HOF, and talked about in the same glowing terms as RHS HOF member Jack Van Yperen or Hall Of Fame co-founder Tom Thurston. It won’t be a comparison of statistics but an acknowledgement of the content of their character that will be the basis of the discussion. That indeed will be a splendid day.

Although I say taxi.. that's "tax-ee" when describing them...I shout "tax-aye" when I'm try to flag one down - I don't know why but there are certain things in life that have no explanation.

The sumacs are making their own fireworks these days. It's amazing to watch the color transformation of the sumac bobs. In 4 months they go from light green to yellow to bright red. Their color seems to change daily.
