60 Is Not The New 40
I am over 60 and know that nothing has changed in terms of 40 being anything other than what it is. Both 60 & 40 are whole numbers. The former indicates significantly more mileage on your body and many more experiences inside your brain from which to draw on. The latter means you have a lot still to learn.
I can clearly remember the age of 40. At age 40 I could literally sprint 50 yards. At age 60 I had learned that it’s more appropriate to walk. Nothing except an oncoming car or delivery scooter is worth the sore muscles that come with running.
60 is a distinctly better age than 40, too. I have seen a tremendous number of ideas that didn’t work, either because they were half-heartedly attempted or were just plain dumb. I appreciate small ideas much more for their potential, than I do the process of searching for a huge idea which compares in scope to the Internet.
I bring this to our readers’ attention because too much is made of being young, looking young, and celebrating this time of life. Not enough credit is given to older people. Young people will one day be old if they are lucky. Then they will have to figure out things like what to make of Human Resources software which offers curt responses to their employment applications. Two examples making the rounds, “If there is a fit we’ll contact you.” Or my personal favorite bit of jibberish, “We are going in a different direction.”
These are instances of missed opportunities for companies to shine in the eyes of those they have rejected, and instead demonstrate they don’t know how to change the default configuration on their software to something which indicates they have the slightest bit of empathy.
Showing empathy to others less well is all I truly want to do with the rest of my life, short as it probably is. I’ve reached that certain age where it is natural to make an honest comparisons of any two completely different stages of Life. For instance, at 40 you believe you have figured Life out. At 60 you know better and that it doesn’t really make anymore sense now than it did earlier in your life. The one big difference in this country is that at 60 you aren’t asked, nor are younger people inclined to question, how you handled things when younger. This is both curious and shocking at the same time. Though take it from me, you get used to it. You realize that your incredulous thoughts are lost on most people. They would prefer to Google for an answer rather than do the work of asking someone who knows. Sad but true. But who am I to try and convince them otherwise?

On The Heels Of Peter Parker
When I looked into this puddle I am reminded of a winter break spent at my friend George Argyros' house - we must have been 11 years old and for some reason we...along with his little brother Anthony and our friend John Elvidge...decided we were gonna write a comic book - my role was to do background drawings and so I would sit at the table on the 3rd floor and lay out a page with 4 boxes and draw the same cityscape over and over and I'm pretty sure I drew this very one on a few pages only to have George later draw in a gargoyle and John a chasing helicopter while Anthony wrote the copy - it was an epic week of dreaming up bad guys and good guys and story lines and telling lots of silly jokes and making sounds only 11 year olds found funny...we put the comic in comic books that cold week in February 1978 and my spider senses tingle just thinking about it.
This is a pure reflection shot into the wet tiles on Union Square west looking west.

Wintertime is workshop time. Our son Joe had this old wooden tabletop sitting in his garage that wasn’t being used, so he gave it to me. I made this stand-up sewing table for Jenni out of it. The frame is made out of regular 1x6 pine from Home Depot (I’ll never buy that crap again). The legs are made out of 2x4’s glued together and then tapered. I have no idea what kind of wood the tabletop is, but it had a sticker on it that said “Product of Thailand.” It’s a fairly hard wood, and has a very attractive bark pocket grain pattern. But the most unique thing about this table is the drawer faces. I cut them out of a small piece of spalted walnut that a friend sent me. Never seen spalted walnut before.
That little brass eagle I found at our local junk store. The eagle is missing a foot, and the store owner was just going to let me have it for free, but I gave him a couple bucks. It makes a nice accent, and fills up that big empty space between the two drawers.
The frame finish is a quality latex paint with color picked by Jenni. The drawer faces are a shellac/lacquer finish, and the table top is finished with two coats of premium Centurion water based polyurethane.

Around The Village
I did not go to the village council meeting this week as it seems the majority of the council does not want the public engaged. While I applaud the safety measures it appears logic has left the building. Instead of such an elaborate complicated set up why not run hybrid?
