Creating A Legacy
Some days I get up with a spring in my step and an impish grin on my face. Other days I am sore from arthritis and dull of mind from the heat. I take this as normal, as my days are generally somewhere in between these extremes.
On my more sprightly days I dream about creating a legacy. I ask myself if all the work we have done over the last two years on Maroons Online and The Maroon will ever count enough to be considered a legacy?
It’s not that I feel we have acomplished much more than a surface look at the subject matter of Ridgewood High School’s history. Or that we have acted like a journalistic enterprise which asked the questions which needed to be asked of Civic leaders. We have tried to fill in some of the holes in our collective history, for instance, being home to the RHS Athletic Hall Of Fame. We have pointed out the successes and failures of the Village Council, the Board of Education (BOE), and the Ridgewood High School Alumni Association (RHSAA).
I will remind everyone that we can’t have a democracy without an informed people. A people fluent in the issues of the current day and the history of our predecessors. A democracy requires that its citizens are aware of how controversies were handled, or mishandled, and the decisions our forebearers were asked to make.
If there is going to be a legacy created out of our current and planned web sites, and the twice weekly curating of current events involving RHS alumni, it will take some planning and forthought. For now, we only possess some interesting ideas and a diverse group of people. We are headed in the right direction but only time will tell what sort of legacy we will leave. Stay tuned.

Degas And His Glow
I was with some friends from college and we went inside the shop at the Metropolitan Opera House and there was a "snow globe" of Degas' ballerina and so I shuck it up and shot this as the star dust spun around her inside her little 19th century world.

You’re Saying It Wrong
affect / effect
“The recent roller coaster weather has had an affect on wildlifein the area.”
—Fox11online.com
“This woman practice gratitude for a year and was stunned by how it effected her health.” —Business Insider
It should have been the opposite in the examples above. According to Barron’s, one of the largest SAT preparation courses, switching effect and affect is one of the most common errors students make….and it’s not only students getting confussed. . So let’s effect a change and correctly affect our speech.
