Community Journalism
The last thirty years has been one long decline for local, community-based journalism. The Internet put the nail in the coffin when it usurped the money-making classified ad business with sites like Craig’s List.
In Ridgewood, there is very little local reporting being done on Village Council or Board Of Education meetings. These sessions are broadcast live on the Internet and stored for later viewing but no analysis is being done like in days past. No Letters To The Editor or scathing editorials which everyone would read and talk about. No fear if word leaked out to the news media from one of these meetings that there would be hell to pay. This lack of accountability from impartial outside sources is why our local institutions seem to function like nobody’s at home.
I’d like to suggest that this doesn’t have to be the case. Given that publishing costs, aside from paying writers, editors & photographers, have never been lower. The Internet acts like the newspaper delivery person of old and software like Substack supplies all the paper & ink.
But how do you pay for the people who create Community Journalism? Usually through paid subscriptions, commercial advertising, joining a non-profit, and that old standby classified advertising. A diverse revenue stream is important if you can’t find a non-profit organization or a group of individuals with deep pockets to fund your endeavor in totality.
How does The Maroon operate? We are self-funded. Our current revenue stream is zero. We offer free commercial ads, public service announcements, and employ civic-minded individuals who are deeply committed to the idea of Community Journalism. Our team believes we can make a difference to society by being in a group which is helping to build stronger ties between RHS alumni.
A devotion to the broad cause of reporting on the world is at the core of how we make community journalism a reality. If you can think of a better way we are all ears. In the meantime, we will keep calling out our public institutions for their foibles and their successes; we’ll continue to feature the photographs and wit & wisdom of RHS Alumni, and we’ll remain, despite veiled legal threats, the home of the Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall Of Fame.

Sun Sets On Allen
For all those who love random street scenes.
By the way...Allen is the name of the street and not necessarily the name of the guy sipping his drink although stranger coincidences have taken place over the course of time - perhaps then the title should be Allen on Allen.
Shot on Stanton street just west of Allen looking east.
Time 5pm.

Pictures
One of the most visited pages on Maroons Online is the one dedicated to remembering our classmates. The addition of pictures gives it a more expressive look. Hope you agree.

The Mark W Barker passing under the International Bridge in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, heading for Cleveland with a load of iron ore 26,000 tons more than she weighs empty. Built in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, this is her very first load after being christened in Cleveland just last week.

Around The Village
When you close our streets, people walk, shop and enjoy our community. How cool is that? One vote away.

You’re Saying It Wrong
allude / elude
“During the call, Top Dawg threatened that Interscope and Universal Music Group (UMG) would take down the song, he eluded to possible legal action and took a highly aggressive stance.” -XXL MAGAZINE
No, Top Dawg alluded to possible legal action. Elude means “to evade, avoid detection, as in “Top Dawg eluded the fans pursuing him.” Allude means to mention in an indirect way, to hint at,” as in what should have been written in the example above: “Top Dawg alluded to possible legal action.”
