American Journalists
Maureen Dowd & Peggy Noonan are my favorite contemporary journalists. Though they work for editorially opposite print newspapers, their own slant always comes through in their writing. I look forward to what they have to say each week and am rarely disappointed or don’t have have my eyes opened to a new way of looking at an idea.
Mark Twain is among my favorite newspaper men. He was unapologetically American: self-aware of his many faults & vices and fearless in his pointing out the hypocracies in society. I think he would have been comfortable living in our current gilded age. He would have seen many familiar sights and been quite capable in satirizing the serious social problems of our era, just like he did during our 19th Century Gilded Age (~1880-1913).
I mention these American journalists because we sorely need wit and wisdom of their type to help combat a lethargy in our country’s leadership. We require analytic minds from both ends of the political spectrum and those in the middle because we all are at fault. The acrimony has become so intense that our democracy is in fact in danger. I am reminded of the appeal made by President Abraham Lincoln in his first innagural address to the nation:
I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."

Morning Blues
On a cold rainy morning...a man walks from one subway car to another in his wet poncho and with his 3 string guitar hoping to make a few bucks
Shot through a rain spotted window of the uptown Q train as we pulled out of 34th street looking east across platform.
Time 655am.

Went morel hunting again yesterday, and again came home with a cool rock and no mushrooms. We made a side trip to the Wisconsin Dells and I found this piece of sandstone on the river shoreline. Sandstone is simply sand that settled on the ground, or underwater on an ocean floor, and over time turned into rock.
I researched what could have caused that black band and came up with two scenarios:
Option A: Iron rich ground water passed through the soft sand before it was cemented into sandstone, and the black band turned into iron oxide, or;
Option B: 650 million years ago a 6 mile wide asteroid struck the earth near the present day Yucatan and caused a cataclysmic cloud of ash and dead dinosaurs to surround the earth. That black cloud settled on the ground and got stuck between the layers of sand.
I’m going with option B.

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." Last year's Pride Committee was awesome and I am so incredibly proud of everyone who made it happen. Thank you Jeanne Theisen & Christian Reinhardt for all your time and talents.
Despite untrue statements and terrible insults from the dais, the mayor was not dropped from the committee; in fact, she was not originally at the table as the committee had chosen to work with long time supporter Bernie Walsh as the council rep. Hard to be dropped when you were not originally there. Facts. https://www.tapinto.net/.../claims-made-that-pride...
