Art, Culture, & Education
According to the 2017 report by the New York City Comptroller,
“the creative economy” is more than just an agglomeration of cultural pursuits: It is a defining economic sector for New York City – on par with finance, real estate or law.
Ridgewood is a well-known suburb of New York City and a highly desirable place to grow up and be educated in. Its school system recently received a generous gift to fund STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) education endeavors. We can all be grateful to the alumni who facilitated this award. Nobody will ever suggest this is a wasted effort.
Of course, it might be looked at another way by asking:
But what about the Arts? Specifically, including any industry whose primary output is creative or cultural – from museums and art galleries, to film and television production, theater and dance companies, fashion, publishing, advertising, performing artists like musicians, and more.
I realize the word “Art” is part of the STEAM Initiative. I’m only suggesting that on the surface it appears the Steam Initiative short changes the occupations I’ve previously mentioned.
Now I am no Luddite. I see how technology is being incorporated very successfully into the arts. The new 3D printer and television studio equipment purchased with the grant from Dave Duffield for Ridgewood High School are great examples.
All I’m suggesting is we need another initiative which is solely based in the Visual & Performing Arts. Furthermore, it ought draw upon the talents of our alumni. The Alumni Art Shows held each year in the Carroll Gallery are a shining example of what I’m getting at. I say we nurture our artists when they are young. Artists speak truth to power. Their influence can’t be overstated or remain unappreciated if we want to believe we live in a decent, humane society. Better children believe they have some artistic talent, so they won’t grow up to believe success is only measured in terms of dollars earned and the pretentious job titles of the professions we are employed in.

A Portrait Of Mother
There are people who find problems in life and make people around them know and there are those who chose to brush them aside and not draw attention to their pain so those around them can enjoy their moment - my mother is part of the greatest generation too - never once asking for sympathy for her frustrations just smiling always and trying to advance joy and hope...especially hope that the bottle of chardonnay on the dinner table will find its way in her direction.
Shot at my sister's house on the dining room table.
Time 9pm.

Lentil Soup
This Winter classic has dozens of variations. Here is one option.
Start with the standard Mediterranean soup base: diced onions, celery, carrots, & garlic in olive oil. Add to it a chunk of ham or a ham hock and sauté till the meat browns.
Add in a can of crushed tomatoes and let it go for 15-20 minutes, stirring when the thought comes to mind. Give it a bit of salt along the way, based on how salty the ham is.
Pour in a pound of lentils (around 2 cups worth) and probably 2 quarts of water. Set it to simmer, still stirring when the idea bubbles up. If using ham it might be done in 30-45 minutes, a fresh hock will be an hour. Taste for salt and adjust (or just add more cheese later…).
I like Ditalinis in my soups, so I have a small pot ready for them - once all are done, add a small scoop to your bowl, pour in the lentils, give it some grated cheese and a grind of pepper.
This is the perfect Friday after Thanksgiving lunch, especially if you need a break from Turkey and you just happen to have some of Thursday’s ham left over.
