Bach As A Daily Ritual
As a kid growing up in Ridgewood it was expected that I attend college. I imagined attending classes on topics which were then exotic subjects to me like Astronomy and Classical Music.
I carried this daydream to its fruition as a freshman at Dickinson College when I began listening to Glenn Gould’s interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos every Sunday morning while reading the Sunday NY Times. The library never opened on Sunday before ten so I would buy the paper in town and bring it back to the dorm. Headphones were essential as I never had a roommate who got up early on a Sunday. This passionate appreciation for classical music has never left me.
Life is faster now, people generally interact with everybody they know on a handheld device all day long. Thankfully, the pandemic has reminded some of us that there were long stretches in our younger lives where nothing was going on. It’s funny to imagine a TV realm with just 7 channels, if you don’t count UHF (Ultra High Frequency) or a dorm three stories high with one pay phone to call outside of town. And our music was mostly transmitted to us via radio waves or on vinyl.
Imagining a slower, collegiate life with the clarity and precision of Bach as a background is easy for me to recall and even duplicate now. Nothing to complain about just duly noting something which meant one thing at its inception and another in its maturity.
Now I can connect the dots and make a single suggestion to improve Ridgewood’s public schools. Replace the ancient system of bells at the beginning and end of classes with precisely timed snippets of Bach. Besides educating everyone in the eternal grandeur of his music it would give new meaning to the words prolog and coda. It’s not hard to imagine that students might hear reminders from teachers to the effect that “the prolog is ending, everyone sit in your seats so we can begin class” or “the coda has begun please remember your homework assignments due next week.” Ah, Bach!

Tales From The Wood…
Coincidence is a funny bird.. I was telling someone I hadn't seen a freight train in Ridgewood in years and here one is...
I'm sharing the New Jersey Transit Schedule link. It's interesting. I can still remember only two choices.. Hoboken or Penn Station before Lautenberg was built.. Now you can take the train to a Giants Game... Or the American Dream Mall or whatever it's called to ski indoors.. Oh.. And there's 3 separate bus lines to Manhattan.. And the B2 is now the 756, I think and the P22 is.... Can't remember.

A Final Lunch Before The Return To College
# 3 returns to Wagner on Staten Island tomorrow so we had to squeeze in a last set of his requested meals. Dinner was Shepherds Pie (Cottage Pie actually, beef rather than Lamb) and he made vanilla ice cream, but those rarely photograph well.
Lunch was a sauté of various items from the garden with garlic and olive oil served over Socca. This is a Provençal chickpea flour crepe that can serve as a basis for a variety of toppings. It also stands well alone, I was introduced to it in Nice as a side for the morning’s strong Espresso.
Easy to make, we usually grill them on a flat cast iron griddle.
To feed two: Sift a cup of chick pea flour with a Tsp of salt and a Tsp of fresh ground pepper. Slowly whisk in a cup of lukewarm water and a glug of olive oil. It should be the consistency of heavy cream. Let it sit while you prepare any toppings.
Heat the griddle on the outdoor grill (or the oven, though I’ve not tried this). When nice and hot, oil it and pour in a thin layer of the batter. Swirl to cover and let it go till starting to crisp (folks who are skilled at pancakes will ace this). Flip and let it continue.
Serve while you start the next one.

Rock Hound
Yesterday this beach was packed with swimmers and rock hounds, but today it was quite blustery and we needed to wear a few layers. Sure did beat the heat and humidity we've had in Merrill for the last few weeks.
Looking northeast towards the Porcupine Mountains.
