Baseball
It was so nice to wake up this morning and read that Major League Baseball is back and that regular season games would resume on April 7. The season is too long by 10 to 20 games anyhow. Just glad to see they won’t try to cram in 162 games before the first November frost.
Where is it written anyway that they have to play a certain number of games? The argument used to be so we could compare statistics with previous eras. Baseball fans love statistics and to argue about who was better. Who really cares? I do. Lefty Grove is the greatest left-handed pitcher of all-time and Christy Mathewson is the greatest right-handed pitcher. You can look it up!
Speaking of baseball, I am always awe struck by the speed which pitchers in fast pitch softball are able to produce. Though this form of Baseball is mostly played by women it strikes fear in my heart to think about trying to hit in one of these games. There is no way I would ever want to face Ridgewood Athletic Hall Of Fame 2006 Inductee Donna O’Connell. Maybe in a slow-pitch game now but never at her peak when she pitched RHS to a 29-0 record and a NJ State Championship. She was the Christy Mathewson of her day and recorded 43 straight victories. Play ball!

Did You Know…
Daylight Savings Time
Dr. Anne Robinson:
Did you know that every year when we "spring forward" to Daylight Savings Time and lose an hour of sleep it takes a toll on our health? The Monday after the time change, rates of heart attacks, hospitalizations, and accidents increase. Drowsy driving causes 6,400 fatal car crashes every year and the rate is highest for drivers 16-24 years old. In fact, car accidents are the leading cause of death in adolescents. Driving with a sleep deficit is equivalent to driving after 3-4 beers. Judgment and reaction time are impaired and the driver is 55% more likely to fall asleep behind the wheel. In communities where they have made the change to a later school start time, car crashes decreased by 16-70%. Student safety is one of the most important reasons cited for making the change to a later start time.

A couple years ago I met a backwoods sawmill guy here in Lincoln County who looks exactly like Santa Claus. I was looking for some unique wood so I went to visit him. He had several sheds full of lumber, but what caught my eye were the racks of quarter sawn oak that had obviously been sitting around for quite a while. I bought a bunch of nice boards for a good price and I finally got around to making something out of it. This is a little TV table that will replace the one we’ve had for many years. The drawer will hold DVD’s and the shelves will hold our DVD player and a bunch of DVD’s. The TV will sit on top.
Because of the way the boards are cut from the log, quarter sawn oak can have some very dramatic flame patterns to it. You can see it in the raised panel cabinet door faces and also in some of the face frame wood. The drawer face actually has the most dramatic flame, but because of the way the light hits it, it doesn’t show up as well.
The finish is Minwax puritan pine stain, then a coat of hand rubbed shellac, then a few thin spray coats of Deft lacquer. The cabinet top has two additional thin brushed coats of a durable water-based poly. It is solidly built. It should last for a few generations or more.

Around The Village
Dear Village Council,
I will be unable to attend tonight‘s meeting as I am traveling and your recent narrow decision to strike down hybrid access makes it impossible for me to participate.
I was shocked last week to hear the stunted discussion of our business community. Not only does removing Dining Corrals reduce revenue, eliminate jobs, and overall reduce the vibrancy of our beautiful town it adds to your scorecard of anti-business tactics.
Since Ramon has left office, the decisions regarding local businesses have been simply unacceptable and not beneficial to anybody. The Healthbarn lease was handled disgracefully and took far too long, Pease library has sat empty for too long, future revenue generating uses of the Schedler House are none existent and now after taking the restaurants hard to come by money all COVID winter you will turn your back on them when there is potential for actual revenue. What a disgraceful way to do business with anybody. What an embarrassment for our community to have this mean spirited action be a reflection of our lovely pro business community.
Last week I watched all five of you participate in Jamboree a local charity that benefits greatly from our vibrant and generous business community. I hope you understand that under cutting the businesses in town means next year they will be less money to donate to important charities such as Jamboree and HSA’s that benefit our community. Without a return on their winter investment the businesses will just have less to give.
Take tonight as an opportunity to commit to our Village and the parking garage that you spent millions of our dollars on. Not only should the corrals be supported but you should take it as an opportunity to promote the garage at each and every turn.
I wish you good luck tonight. I hope the conversation stays positive and rooted in reality. As always if you need any help in making anything happen I am available for that.
