Building A Community Ethos
When I graduated RHS in 1977 it was with the last class of students from Hohokus. Everyone at RHS who knew them treated them just as if they lived in Ridgewood.
According to Wikipedia, the Village had hosted students from Hohokus for 75 years. These students could literally bike or walk to RHS if they wanted, and there was a designated yellow school bus that transported many of them on a daily basis.
In hindsight, it appears as either a fit of pique over an agreement with Hohokus that would have had Ridgewood shoulder higher costs, or as the right thing to do because of school overcrowding in Ridgewood. Whichever reason it was, Ridgewood ended a reasonable accommodation made to their much smaller neighbor.
One of my favorite teachers, Roger Sweeney, summed up his feelings about the decision to deny Hohokus students an RHS education by simply saying:
They were all good kids.
What he implied was the Hohokus residents were a valuable part of the Ridgewood community and shared a common set of values that made all our lives better.
What was never really discussed at the time was how future generations of children might never feel the same allegiance to any community, and that we would all be the poorer for this lack of constancy.
The remarkable thing is that almost 45 years later these same Hohokus/RHS graduates, long since scattered, still identify with Hohokus and Ridgewood. They have no hard feelings in their hearts, only warm remembrances of both communities and the time they lived and attended school there.
It goes to show how hard it is to measure the quality of a village’s citizenship, harder still to measure its generosity, especially when it’s much easier to compare tax rates. What’s a good kid worth? Plenty, on so many levels of understanding.

Light Speed And The 7 Train
Though the escalators move at normal speed...I like to unfocus my eyes and pretend I'm with Luke, Han, Chewy and old Ben Kenobe as we push the Millennium Falcon to its limits - when I finally refocused...I shot this as we made it to the bottom.
Shot heading into the 7 train at Hudson Yards.

LBI Day 4:
The overnight thunderstorms left us just after sunrise and a perfect day followed.
I had brought several of Hemingway’s shorts, but after Kilimanjaro, Macomber, & “A Clean Well Lighted Place”, I’ve decided that he is a bit heavy for a beach read.
The spot on Kentford is a consistent haven, one that anchors our time here.
Dinner was with the neighbors. We made our LBI Brats and my Father’s Escarole & Beans ( though tonight we used the last of the swiss chard from the home garden).

One of the things that I love about our stone bud vases is that they can handle a longer stem without tipping over. Shown here, our Chalice Bud Vase in Alabaster.
