Businesses Racing To Automate
Say the word “automation” and it conjures up images of Fritz Lange’s classic silent movie Metropolis, where robots have replaced humans.
Automation can mean the replacement of humans by machines, but not always. If a non-profit writes down instructions, procedures, and records minutes it is automating work for future volunteers. This is not a bad process. The new members simply have to read the archives and they will have an understanding of their assignment, what sort of ideas have been discussed, and can then gauge for themselves how well they are doing.
Currently, all over the media, a talent shortage is being proclaimed across all industries. The Great Resignation came about partly as a result of relying upon automation in reading job applications. How much less infuriating would hiring be if humans had to talk face-to-face or over the phone with each applicant? Instead of depending upon a software program set to reject resumes based on key words like age? It wasn’t that long ago when we actually used to go through this rite of passage.
The time-honored process of communicating with job applicants in a responsible & timely manner was one everybody could understand. It has been replaced by an antagonistic ritual where the youngest, least qualified individuals have the edge. Sadly, those chosen by this intellectually bankrupt process usually want and need adult supervision and mentoring to further their career development. Not a cockeyed fraternity/sorority hazing administered by under trained and unqualified managers, who survived a broken system to get to their own level of incompetence.
If you are forced to use automated resume scanners, you usually end up to hiring the youngest applicant because folk wisdom says they will be inexpensive, fast, and desperate. It’s like the old adage, “You don’t get fired for choosing IBM.” In today’s terms, this translates to you won’t make a big mistake by hiring a cheap, inexperienced person. If they quit in the first week on the job, or don’t show up at all on the first day, you just hire another one. How about we contact people and thank them for their application? A voicemail message is all it takes. There is a phone number on every application. A note can be made that the call had been made.
This sort of human touch benefits the hiring manager and the applicant. If you think there are too many applications to do this, then you can’t recall how humbling it is to wait seven weeks to receive a job rejection via email. The fact your office receives 10,000 applications a week does not mean you can be rude & unkind to your potential employees, not to mention customers! Too many applications only means you need to configure your automation process to stop accepting applications. More is not better in this case, and actually worsens the reputation of your company as a place anybody would want to work at or buy from.

A Balloon Named Ronald
As the Ronald McDonald balloon moved about under the netting waiting to be taken for a practice walk...I shot this reflection in the wet flecked concrete of the parking lot at Citifield.
Shot looking south with old parking line and leaves.
Time 11am.
