Did You Know…?
"Did you know that most of our REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep or dream sleep is in the early morning hours? Early school start times interrupt REM sleep which is critical for memory consolidation and processing emotions. In his article (below), Matthew Walker, author of Why We Sleep, discusses the social and emotional impairment caused by a sleep deficit.” -Dr. Anne Robinson, RHS 1977
The Sleepless See Threats Everywhere
Even to a casual observer it’s clear that there are few issues we all agree on these days. Though making sure our school children are well rested is probably an exception.
The idea of a Later School Start Time in Ridgewood Middle Schools & RHS has been studied for over 10 years and has the full support of RHS Principal Jeff Nyhuis. There are plenty of medical studies to support the idea, as well as success stories from School Superintendents who have implemented the process in their districts.
We are well aware of the scheduling changes and alterations to our current way of operating schools and do not take this changes lightly or promise they will go off without a hitch. We do believe that there is enough evidence to go forward with this plan in the fall of 2022. The final decision is for our educators to make. Parents will be essential in evaluating the decision after it is put into effect. This is the most effective way to move forward. In case you hadn’t heard, two Fridays a month are currently designated as “Sleep-in” days for the students.

Thank you in advance for giving this matter your serious reflection.

Looking In...Looking Out
A young boy looks out the window wondering if there's actually a winner in the so-called rat race.
Shot outside the Brooklyn Diner on 57th street just west of 7th Avenue looking east inside with reflection.

Welcoming the IBM Champions for 2022
My Office for the Day: Welcoming the IBM Champions for 2022.
I was invited to present Best Practices for our new and returning Champions. This is an IBM program I’ve been involved with for a few years. It recognizes those of us who are not just experts with their technology, but more importantly are mentors within the larger community.
It has been over two years since we’ve been able to hold these conferences in person. Presenting remotely is a far less appealing approach than the roar of the crowd and the smell of the grease paint. Hopefully the next time I get the nod I’ll again have a room full of like minded folks.

I Grew Up In Ridgewood
Author’s Note: In memory of my best friend Howard Emma
I grew up in Ridgewood I was a lucky guy/From Somerville to OLMC up to Ridgewood High/ I made a Lot of good friends there but Time took them away/I'm here to get all of them back from yesterday
I grew up in Ridgewood and when there was snow/It was off to Mastin's hill where sledding we would go/With no fear of lawsuits just kids out having fun/ The way a childhood was meant to be for everyone
Al's and Harry's Sealfons Henry's Deli too/You could go to Espo's if you want a brew/Warner for a movie Drapkins for a pen /Woolworth's for a banana spit / Wish I could go back again
I grew up in Ridgewood Happy Fourth of July/With the greatest parade around and Fireworks in the sky /Hanging at the Bandshell where everybody sang/ And always a great parade float from the Harding Road Gang.
I grew up in Ridgewood and hung out in the lawns /Camped out by the old canal and saw the morning dawns/The Heights were never far away I had some good friends there / They may have been more wealthy But as Kids we didn't care
You could hit up Hartwicks roast beef on a roll/VanDyks or T&W if ice cream was your goal/Duck Pond in the winter if you liked to skate/So many different reasons that once made Ridgewood great
I grew up in Ridgewood and hung out at Graydon Pool /That's where you spent your summers when you got out of school / Watching all the pretty girls in a two piece bathing suit / Smile as they pass by and tell them they look cute
I grew up in Ridgewood there's not more to say /I never got to graduate my family moved one day /And though I finished High School so very far away /I grew up in Ridgewood and that's where my heart will stay
