Culinary Arts Lab
As part of the Duffield STEAM Initiative, the RHS Culinary Arts Lab will receive an upgrade. For all you restaurateurs, this means an upgrade of the RHS student kitchen facilities. As happy as I am for the teachers and students in all the departments receiving funding, it is the Kitchen I will be most excited to visit.
Once the students learn how sharp the knives are and how hot the pans can get, they will grow to love cooking, maybe as much as I do. There isn’t a tangible piece of knowledge I can point to in my K-12 in Ridgewood, besides the cooking skills I began to acquire at GW, that has been as consistently useful in my life. I fell under the positive influence of a great many talented and thoughtful teachers and principals in Ridgewood. Though none taught more memorable lessons than the home economics teachers at GW, Mrs. Ebersol and Mrs. McCabe.
They began the first class with a discussion of knives, even though we never touched anything sharper than a butter knife. Then each class we learned to bake one recipe and had time enough to eat our work by the end of class. Talk about positive reinforcement!
It isn’t that I want RHS graduates to skip college to work in a restaurant. The reality of restaurant life is that the hours are long and involve working holidays, things that take some getting used to. But as a first career there are few which match it for gaining experience working with people.
If learning to cook and budgeting the costs becomes knowledge that RHS graduates acquire then the Culinary Lab upgrade will be regarded as a success. Parents might come to the conclusion that it’s a good idea for children to learn how to prepare meals, like a Caesar with home made croutons. Especially if they get to eat the results.

From Out Of The Shadows
A beautiful day only made more beautiful with all the smiling faces (and no masks) - I didn't even have to use my AK (95)...I gotta say it was a good day.
Shot on Broadway just north of 25th street looking south with the Flatiron building covered in scaffolding in the distance.
Time 10am.

Duffield STEAM Initiative
RHS 1958 Donation
The Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation STEAM Initiative encompasses three state-of-the-art renovations and enhancements to RHS to support the growing needs of its robust curricular program. The Innovation and Makerspace Lab will be upgraded and expanded with the latest technology and equipment to support this increasingly important area of study. The RHS Media Lab will now have a new Digital TV Studio with leading-edge audio and visual equipment, giving students access to high-tech systems used by the industry. And finally, the Culinary Arts Lab will undergo modernization with new cooking stations, commercial grade work tables, appliances and equipment.
“We are proud to be able to give back to my alma mater, Ridgewood High School,” said Dave Duffield. “We hope that the Duffield STEAM Initiative helps to inspire students to become the next generation of leaders in the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.”
Citizens Park
Update
The following information was found in the Village Council Public Meeting Minutes of May 14, 2014 by the team at Ridgewood Parks and Recreation:
“In 2003, the Village Council added one-half an acre to the north end of the property by purchasing the Bozzo property and knocking down the house to allow for a full-sized soccer field across from the George Washington Middle School. The Village Council appropriated money for the purchase of the home, and the Sports groups also contributed money towards the purchase; however, $25,000 was still needed. Mr. Schott went back to the core group of residents who had formed Citizens Park and the major donors toward that effort and they were able to raise the additional $25,000 needed very quickly.”
The Bozzo property residence was the first open space purchase by the Village of Ridgewood.
The wood structure was razed and the property was incorporated and became the only official multipurpose field on the west side of Ridgewood.
The rock in the attached photo has all of the benefactors names. The rock can be seen off the small parking lot.
A little history about how Citizens Park, and how it became a part of our wonderful Village.
Between 1968 and 1969, Citizen's Park Association of Ridgewood, Inc., a non-profit corporation in the State of New Jersey, paid West Side Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood $180,000.00 for the property that Citizens Field is currently located on and then sold it to the Village of Ridgewood for under $100.00 for the transfer of title.
