Blissful Dreams Around Graduation
My classmate, Anne Robinson, suggested the song “Free” by the Zack Brown Band as apropos to this time of year. We all know it or at least we all might remember once feeling this way, as school was winding down and an entire summer lay before us. Her story went like this:
I remember hearing the Zac Brown Band song, "Free" as my daughter and I were driving together one beautiful summer afternoon just as she was entering that perfect sweet spot, those months between graduation and the start of college. It was that one line, "Just as free, free as we'll ever be..." Hit us both at the same time. We just looked at each other and smiled.
I understand we can’t expect people to simply forget living through a pandemic. It would be nice, but it’s not going to happen. Instead, maybe we can remind ourselves from time to time of those moments when we were “free as we’ll ever be” to keep events in perspective. We have demonstrated a lot of courage during this crisis, as evidenced by people returning to work, to school, and being vaccinated. There are many unknowns associated with these activities, too many.
So we can let our minds drift, or let our thoughts be “mindful.” However you want it stated, we’ll begin the processing of the year plus gone by that has irrevocably changed us. Consider the “grind” work culture formerly glorified and how we carelessly sent our children to find out what we knew already: there is no time at the end of the day for relationships. Or maybe we can focus on the idea that mental health is health, and mental healthcare is healthcare. Recognizing either of these now obvious situations would go a long way towards ending the isolation and, in some cases resulting depression, that are by-products of our country’s lock down.
A few moments of daily bliss are all I am suggesting. Some people will achieve it through music, others through art or team sports. These are some alternatives to dwelling too much on our recent past. Find one you are comfortable with. See if it doesn’t prompt a memory or two of when you were smiling at your Mom from the passenger seat of the family car, and she was smiling right back at you.

The Long Wait And The Empire State
On the longest day of the year...I wait like those crossing the intersection where three roads collide and when there are no cars...like those on foot...I make my move (or in this case...take my photo) - for me...the capture comes in many forms but as always...I try my best to not have any cars in my photos - I think this one was worth the wait.
Shot on the tip where Broadway and 5th Avenue cross at 23rd street looking north with Empire State building in distance.
Time 345pm.
