And just like that, with this issue we begin a second year of gathering memories and adding to the recollections of our common past. Call us “hobbyists” because we don’t get paid, but our efforts do require patience and skill. Whether you believe the amount of time is appalling or enthralling depends upon your outlook.
Maroons Online exists to amplify our energy and enthusiasms. Like so many things which are new, different, and produced entirely by volunteers, we strive to chart a fresh course and simultaneously imbue our existing traditions with a spirit we strongly feel in our hearts & minds.
In 2022, we plan to increase the number of contributors and continue to extend our circulation via word-of-mouth & The Internet. We’ll be contributing on Facebook, Instagram & Pinterest, besides our own website and this semi-weekly journal.
Our digital postings make our memories available to alumni across a wide spectrum of ages and locales. We continue to look at new routes to alumni & friends, including the much talked about Metaverse, Web3, and extended reality protocols like VR, AR & XR. We will act as a lighthouse providing guidance along this journey and not badger people to get onboard the digital train or else.
We’ll do this to remind readers and ourselves that our collective history ought to be remembered, preserved, and savored. A close examination of our history provides us all with some much needed proof that we can live in a society where we look out for each other.
In 2022, we will also call attention to the current state of the Arrow Yearbook collections at RHS and the Ridgewood Public Library. We’d never suggest either institution was mishandling these artifacts, only that the time has come to digitize them and preserve them on the Internet. Our editors are available for guidance & tech support, as well as hands-on assistance. Let us know if you agree and have some ideas on how this can best be accomplished.
Wishing you all a Happy New Year!

The Jewel Of The Harbor
A lonely old lady pushes her cart as she reaches in hoping to scatter the few pieces of stale bread she has.
This is a pure reflection shot in a puddle at Wall Street and the east ever looking east towards Brooklyn.
Time 1145am.

Annual Cortellesi Poem
It may appear that Twenty-One is just a déjà vu,
a second trip around the sun with hopes for Twenty-Two…
Yet blessings of these two long years, while often hard to see,
will clearly outweigh all the fears that plague each family
As proof of what we’ve come to learn, we offer up some clues,
in hopes that all may leave astern the clouds that bring ill news.
We’ve learned that family and friends will always lift you past
the trouble that so often sends those clouds that overcast.
For Deb and I, our three remain a joy we freely share,
which helps the five of us sustain the COVID wear and tear.
We hope that you can share the joys that come in Capricorn;
the happiness your girls and boys have brought since they were born.

Rock Hound
The grandkids are on their way home to Alabama, and the house is quiet, but a last-minute request yesterday made for a frenzied afternoon in the workshop. Harper wanted a rocking cradle for her doll, and Maverick wanted a necklace hanger for his rock necklaces.
We made the cradle out of the last scraps of boards I had milled from an old growth red pine log I pulled out of the river a few years ago. We made the necklace hanger out of a pine knot I pulled out of the river this last summer. Of course, they also went home with their pockets full of shiny rocks.

New Year’s Day
coffee, then
spent the morning sweeping out my shop,
putting things in their place -
wood, tools, dust, garbage, future projects.
took a break
read about the immune system for a few hours.
boy, it's crazy how we manage to protect ourselves,
even from ourselves.
went skating with my gang;
muscles I have not heard from in over a year
told me what they thought of my agility ability
and my anti-abstemious, anti-abstinent alacrity for drinking.
But through the pain
I got to watch my children
now grown tall gracefully work in the rink,
carve their own arcs on white glass;
I got to make the circuit holding hands with my wife
and soon my neglected muscles got into the groove,
the endorphins kicked in,
the O-Jays singing Love Train,
and it's a Happy New Year day,
all NOW,
which you don't often get...
for there will be plenty of time
later
to feel the cold
breath of
neglect and
regret.
Peace
