Lessons From The Past
We can't go back to the past, but we can learn lessons from it.
“History doesn’t repeat itself but it often rhymes,” as Mark Twain is often reputed to have said. (I’ve found no compelling evidence that he ever uttered that nifty aphorism. No matter — the line is too good to resist.)
Consider this very common feeling among my RHS and college classmates: you were left behind if you didn't immediately get a corporate job right out of college. I have no hard evidence this has changed since when I went through it, other than what I saw my two nephews go through. They put tremendous pressure on themselves while in school, received internships, and are now taking their first steps in the corporate arena. So the history here probably rhymes.
I certainly had no better suggestions for them to pursue. I might have incited a cultural panic in my family if I had repeated the most overused words in the last 50 years of graduation speeches: “Pursue your dreams.” Even if this is what I did for a time. I took the road less travelled by becoming an accomplished restaurateur.
Reflecting upon this time, I always wonder what my 8th grade cooking teachers, Mrs. Ebersol & Mrs McCabe, at GW Middle School would have said if I had told them of the inspiration their classes instilled in me. I regret never having taken the time to do this. I think of them every time I knead a loaf of bread or pizza dough, or slip a tray of popovers into the oven.
Following in my culinary footsteps would have made no sense to my nephews since neither of their schools offered cooking to boys or girls. Course cuts were needed to pay for all the new computers & software, meaning stoves and refrigerators were removed.
You would think with the professional inclination our schools’ curricula now have they would have noted how useful it is to be able to make an omelet, mix a salad dressing, or know what to keep on hand in a well stocked pantry and refrigerator.
Cooking is an endeavor which educated peope are always drawn to. When it is eliminated from a young person’s course of study, we end up with less educated graduates. The sights, sounds, and most importantly smells & tastes of cooking cannot be recreated on Zoom or Googled. Both of these platforms can certainly help but it’s always going to be a hands on set of skills which students can rely upon for the rest of their lives. Glad to know this ommision is starting to be corrected in Ridgewood and new initiatives are in the offing. Bon Appétit!

The Girl With The Flute
A young girl with braided hair walks slowly while playing her recorder.
This was shot looking west into the marble tiles at the bottom of the steps at the Winter Garden in the World Finacial Center with hundreds of kids running about and green lanterns hanging above.
Time 430pm.

The Grandfather Falls hydro. Of the 25 hydro plants along the Wisconsin River, the Grandfather Falls hydro ranks second only to the huge Prairie du Sac dam in terms of annual power generation and people served. With a generation capacity of 17 megawatts, it ranks third in that category. The reason this little station generates so much electricity is because it concentrates the power of a 100-foot head of water through tubes, called penstocks, directly to the turbines. Those two green towers behind the plant are surge tanks. They prevent the turbines from blowing out due to a sudden surge in water pressure.
The old wooden penstocks were recently replaced with steel ones. The old ones leaked badly, but they were fun to walk under on a hot summer day.

The Time Of Our Lives
Football is so complicated.
It takes seven men in suits
To make sense of it - at least for us
At home, having just watched the play,
Or the quarter, or half,
Or the whole game,
Or as we wait for the game
To start;
These men are so...friendly...
Despite also being
Knowledgeable.
They are so smart,
Not only can they explain
The fine points of the game,
But they also star in commercials
Bracketing the useful
Game analysis,
Dedicated to the selling of important things
We should, if we know what's good for us,
Probably buy.
Sometimes,
There is also a woman
Helping us understand
How we are spectating through
The time of our lives.
Peace
