Our Common Heritage
Reunions are grand times. We’ll certainly get back to having more of them again once this Covid scare is behind us. They are an intrinsic part of our common heritage. They represent certain elements beneficial to us as a whole. They shouldn’t be left to whither on the vine or be unilaterally exploited by individuals.
I personally would also like to see & hear more about community service activities involving alumni who don’t live in Bergen County. Nothing wrong with all the good works currently being done by residents in the name of the schools and village. I just want to know about ideas being contemplated & then tried out in pilot programs in other parts of our country. It’s by thinking big that we’ll be capable of bridging the gaps between communities and to jettison the dismal idea that Life is a free-for-all.
Jeff Yearing suggested a brilliant example of this sort of thinking when he offered how interesting it might be if all (5) of the towns in the US named “Ridgewood” were in communications with one another. Call it sister cities or pen pal towns. No matter the size or scope of these ideas and the interactions they produce, taken as a whole it would go a long way towards mending the economic & social divides that have developed over the last 40 years.
The seemingly small ideas if allowed to flourish can build momentum for further growth in the all important knowledge of that which binds us together, rather than those distinctions that make us grow apart. In the best case, we might see our choices, chances, and privileges as a path toward generosity, long-term thinking, and connection. These are the essential ingredients of a humane society, one which celebrates its common understanding of how to live as a community. Drop me a line if you have some thoughts to share on this, or any topic you fancy.

Rock Hound
We had a little Alberta Clipper move through today and it provided a nice change in scenery, but also slippery roads. Thankfully it won't get too cold or windy after the system moves out.
