Put Out More Flags
I am all for more flags being raised in our communities. Whether they are used as a symbol, a signalling device, or for decoration. Every flag has a distinct size, shape, color, and design which people can imbue with meaning. We sing to them, regulate when they can be raised and lowered, and argue about who respects them the most.
My hope is that by raising more flags we might help educate each other. Flags represent ideas and by raising them we show that we have something on our minds, a feeling we may not be able to find words for but which a particular flag states quite elegantly.
Displays of flags have always about more than a piece of cloth flapping in the breeze. For instance, the original Pride Flag was created in 1978. There are now 23 different versions by one count. To those who criticize I say, “What’s not to like about these colorful symbols depicting a rainbow of colors?” Each stripe signifies a different personality trait or aspect of people’s lives, and the original design was reportedly inspired by Judy Garland’s song, “Over The Rainbow.”
The recent kerfuffle in Ridgewood over a Rainbow Flag in Van Neste Park showed how an innocent gesture can be easily blown out of proportion. Let’s face it, we could all use a little more wisdom in our lives. The simple truths inherent in putting out flags is a good place to begin. An honest observance of a raised flag quietly transforms even the most hard hearted among us. One can’t help acquiring insights and a bit of sympathy for the story being told by a flag waving in the wind.

Rainbow Flag In Van Neste Park
From a long FaceBook thread. Siobhan cleared the air of much that was inaccurate with the following post:
I just read most of this and wanted add a couple of points as the statements made Saturday were untrue and warrant a correction. In 2016, the rainbow flag was raised in Van Neste on the American flag pole for one day as part of a response to the Pulse nightclub shooting not as part of Pride (the mass shooting took place in June). In 2017, CRAB officially requested the rainbow flag to be raised at Village Hall and a well documented scenario played out in the press and our town with the silver lining being enormous community support for the flag. In response to overwhelming public pressure, the Village under Mayor Knudsen placed a rainbow banner on two left over field fence stakes in the ground. One year they even hung the banner upside down and our committee needed to ask for a correction. As for speakers, there is no rule that the Mayor needs to speak and often other council members are asked to speak if the committee feels they have a more personal connection to the event. Late in the planning process this year after the Village Manager informed the mayor of our planning session, the mayor informed us that in no uncertain terms she would be speaking.
Later in the same FaceBook thread:
I do wish the village would craft a policy on the forum pole and have been advocating and offering help to make it happen but I felt that the pole was a step forward. Also all kidding aside I feel strongly that the rainbow flag is not political and should be hung at Village Hall however emotionally I feel that may be the worst place to hang anything these days (not kidding just being honest). Much better to be in the center of town as a constant symbol of pride.

Handcrafted Art
Welcome to M + A
Our Mission
At M + A, we remain energized by our mission of offering special, handcrafted artisan goods – for good; inspired by our most favorite art and artists, brought to life by centuries old artisanal practices.
The Handcrafted Difference
Making artisanal decor and accessories by hand is important to us. We love things that reveal the hand that made them, the slight imperfections that signal the work of an artisan. We love to fuse traditional techniques with a modernist slant; the pairing of these seemingly opposite points of view creates something that feels compelling and interesting.
We believe that in making small quantities by skilled artisans and with traditional methods, we are creating meaningful objects that have ‘pass on to the next generation’ value. With each beautifully made piece there is an added bonus of knowing that we are collectively supporting an artisan ecosystem.
We delight in the specialness of what hands and hearts can do and look forward to sharing with you our story and the stories of the people who made these special pieces, as well as all who inspire us every day.
