Excellence In Athletics
The most important things done in the Athletic realm are usually accomplished by a group of individuals together. Even Cross-Country running is scored as a team.
Where it appears that one person is responsible, in fact, behind the scenes there are plenty of coaches, parents, and supporters who helped further the cause. A winner is one who recognizes these contributions and feels a sense of obligation to publicly acknowledge them.
As of late we have added more details to the Maroons Online tableau of the history of athletics at RHS. We are lucky there are so many photos and records depicting events and people long past, for we might have forgotten them otherwise.
The history of Athletics at RHS parallels neatly with the history of our country. It contains the struggles of women to be allowed to compete in athletics. It also conveys the belated acceptance of a member of a minority, Carlos Peay, to lead. One of the 2020 class of inductees to the RHS Athletic Hall Of Fame, Carlos Peay was Co-Captain of Ridgewood's 1950 State Championship Team. He was the first Black Captain in RHS history... Of any team.
Our strengths and weaknesses are always on display in athletics, those of the participants as well as the organizers who make the rules. When the rules are stacked against someone or some group it makes their accomplishments all the more noteworthy.
The upcoming RHS Athletic Hall Of Fame Dinner is being organized by Co-Chairmen Jeff Yearing RHS 1966 and Tom Thurston RHS 1977. It will be a moment when we will publicly and with appropriate solemnity bestow our appreciation upon 10 individuals for representing and supporting RHS athletics. Sally Thurston RHS 1985 will be hosting the details for the evening. Questions about tickets and seating arrangement can be directed to her at thurston @optonline.net

The Boy Who Sold The World
The title is cool and all but the real title should be..."how I felt the day after I traded my rookie year Thurman Munson baseball card for a Rico Petrocelli, 2 pixie sticks, and a pack of firecrackers."
Shot looking south with the Unisphere.
Time 445pm.

Pulled Pork Sandwiches
I squeezed in a quick late afternoon lunch as Frank and Tom were doing a “Tractor Ballet” while taking the second cutting from our triangle field.
We use a combo technique of a dry rub then BBQ sauce that we modified from Steve Raichlen. He has two great books, “How to Grill” and “Planet BBQ”. Our recipes follow.
Take a full pork shoulder, rinse then dry rub it, cover, and into a 280 degree oven for 8 hours. Poke it with a knife and if done it will be ready to fall apart, otherwise check at 30 minute intervals. Shred the meat, mix with as much of the fat as your cardiologist allows, and add in your BBQ sauce to moisten.
Serve on a Hawaiian roll with coleslaw.
Dry Rub:
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup paprika (not smoked)
3 Tbl pepper
1 Tbl salt
1 Tbl garlic powder
1 Tbl onion powder
1 Tbl celery seeds
1-2 Tsp cayenne
Mix it all up and store in a tight container.
BBQ Sauce:
2 huge bottles of ketchup (100-114 oz.)
3/4 cup cider vinegar
1 1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup molasses
3/4 cup mustard
1 Tbl of the above Dry Rub
1 Tbl pepper
Simmer it all for around 30 minutes being careful to not let the sugars stick. Let cool and return to the ketchup bottles.
