RHS Athletic Hall Of Fame
The RHS Athletic Hall Of Fame inducted its first members in 2004. With the exception of the 2020 pandemic year, it has received new members every two years since. On October 30, 2021 the Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall Of Fame will finally be able to give those chosen for the 2020 class the recognition they deserve.
While there is a wall with the plaques of Athletic Hall Of Fame inductees in the gym at RHS and there are trophy cases to hold their artifacts, the RHS Athletic Hall Of Fame is more of, to borrow a phrase from the San Franciso book shop owner and poet Lawrence Ferlingetti, A Coney Island Of The Mind. This is not to denigrate all the painstaking work of almost 20 years by RHS alumni Jeff Yearling, Tom Thurston, and Sam Cermack. Or to say that the dinners hosted by RHS alumna Sally Thurston have been insufficient. No, the members have been feted in a manner commenserate with the sacrifices they made to their particular sports. Nobody is questioning anyone’s dedication.
I say the RHS Athletic Hall Of Fame is like a book of fine poetry only to remind us that what we see in the plaques and trophy cases pales in comparison to the full length encyclopedia of what has occurred and has yet to be assembled.
An encyclopedia is my preferred metaphor for the RHS Athletic Hall Of Fame because I’m hoping that by using a scholastic term, I’ll invoke new methods of thinking as to the possibilities inherent in the idea. I don’t want to stop making available the voluminous amount of records and materials that has been collected by the Athletic Department over the years. These efforts are well underway.
I actually want to expand the efforts to include the academic and civic awards that are given out each year. Both terms “Scholar and Athlete” are bound together tightly in our venacular. I say it’s time to give them a museum in which to live and be appreciated by future generations.
To paraphrase, the long distance runner Steve Prefontaine, A race is a work of art that people can look at and be affected in as many ways as they're capable of understanding.” I am suggesting that atheltic and academic honors and achievements can be viewed in an astounding number of ways. It’s time to find them a suitable home.

Have A Ball
A ball rolls across my frame - an indication of the colorful lunacy instore for the rest of the independenceday celebration - FYI...if you look closely...you can see the water being pulled up by its rubber friction.
Shot on the west side of the park at 16th street looking north.
Time 1145am.

PSA On Data Security and Privacy
What Is Social Engineering?
Social engineering is when hackers use psychological techniques to gain access to IT systems through human interaction and trickery. The best known of the countless methods they employ: by email, by impersonating someone in authority on the phone, and sometimes by dropping a USB stick in the company parking lot and hoping someone picks it up to plug into their computer. As the name implies, this is a technique which exploits knowledge of observed human behavior. Only means to mitigate the risk is to do the opposite, question bullying calls, and never open attachments that haven’t been scanned by security software.

Ridgewood/Fairlawn Thanksgiving Day Football Game
History of Rivalry
There was a time when Ridgewood High School played football on Thanksgiving Day. The game was in the morning and it helped people work up an appetite for the main event later in the day. Thanks to Jeff Yearing, RHS 1966, for supplying the stats, history, and pictures. Much more to come on this front.
