RHS Diaspora
The best guess is 25,000 people comprise the RHS Diaspora in the United States. It would be fascinating to have more information on people’s whereabouts but it would take a dedicated and secure mechanism to accomplish this feat. It’s not on anyone’s published roadmap.
A question comes to mind: What responsibilities do alumni have to support their alma mater, if any? Were the property taxes paid while living in Ridgewood enough? the bake sales? the fruit boxes? the outright gifts of cash?
Another question is: What does the institution owe the graduate after they have moved away, become part of the diaspora? Again, you could say that educating them in a safe, well-run environment with dedicated and highly educated teachers was the best that could be done.
I’ll offer one more question: What happens if both the diaspora and the institution believed their education compact was for a lifetime? What if Education did not end at graduation?
We saw this week that RHS 1958 alumnus Dave Duffield donated $635,000 for Arts and Sciences programs at RHS. The actions taken by the Dave Duffield Foundation on the grant application made by the RHS Alumni Association certainly suggest that there is interest in keeping connected long after graduation. Lesser known contributions are made every day by alumni and we’ll keep on bringing them to your attention.

The Old Man And The Pizza
When you get to a certain age...each meal becomes that more important - I watched this guy stare down the options for a good 3 minutes all the while I was whispering "get the pepperoni...get the pepperoni" until he turned around and said "I heard you the first time...I might be old but I'm not deaf" - he got the pepperoni.
Shot into the marble wall in the basement of Grand Central.

Dave Duffield
RHS 1958
Thanks, Dave! Largest donation ever made to RHS for the arts and sciences. If the money is used as indicated it means the return of cooking classes. As a former restaurateur I can’t tell you how much it meant to me to have been in an all-boys cooking class in the 8th grade. I still use some of the recipes and techniques. Learning skills that last a lifetime is what being educated is all about.
