Russia Invades Ukraine
You're a citizen of the world, act like one. This is one of those times.
Today we all need some encouragement. With war raging in the Ukraine and no clear end in sight, it’s time to remember we are all in this thing called “Life” together. No matter how much you want to be an isolationist and claim it’s not my problem, it is everyone’s concern because we are tightly bound geopolitically and economically.
Despite the struggle going on far away, we still have local problems which we must face. They deserve the same high seriousness we extend towards people caught in the middle of war anywhere in the world.
On the news beat we have assigned ourselves, the events of today include two issues:
The League Of Women Voters Of Ridgewood and their advocacy for Later School Start Times. We suggest you click on the link below and view the video which they have produced with the full participation of Dr. Anne Robinson and RHS Principal Jeff Nyhuis. They make a strong case that Teen Sleep Deprivation is a public health issue. Please give their sincere arguments your attention and let your HSA (Home School Association) or PTA know how you feel. An email to RHS alumnus and School Superintendent Dr. Thomas Gorman would also be an effective way to let yourself be heard. Be polite in your correspondence as he is a good man with a difficult decision to make.
The ongoing debate on whether Ridgewood Village Council meetings ought to be streamed and made available to citizens who are unable to attend in person. Hard to disagree with this attempt at creating more participation in our local governance process. It’s even harder to figure out why it’s not being done, or at least being put up for a vote by the council. Placing the issue on the Village Council Agenda for its next meeting is the logical place to begin.

It is truly Unbelievable that this is still being resisted. Thank you to Paul Vagianos and Pamela Perron for being such decent human beings and supporting this effort.

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. - Hybrid council meetings were not on the agenda of Wednesday evening’s Village Council Public Workshop, but the matter was brought up by multiple Ridgewood residents during public comments.
“On behalf of the League of Women Voters of Ridgewood, I urge you once again to adopt hybrid access to village council meetings, or at least place the subject on the agenda and vote on it,” said Ridgewood resident Ann Melone.
Resident Siobhan Crann Winograd echoed these sentiments. “Resisting [hybrid access] is sending a message that you just don’t want to hear from people, on top of all the terrible messages it sends to the disabled community. The fact that you’re not putting it on the agenda as well seems, from the public’s perspective, that you’re antagonizing us,” said Winograd.Councilman Paul Vagianos spoke out in favor of hybrid access and acknowledged the matter of cost. “One of the things that’s been discussed with me is that there’s a cost to this and that we may not be able to do this, so with Heather [Mailander]’s permission, I contacted our head of IT, Dylan Hansen, who informed me that we have the technology in place to do this tomorrow, we don’t need to do anything else, we can do this immediately.”
According to Councilman Vagianos, implementing hybrid access would cost about $7-8,000 per year. “I find that to be a nominal cost given the amount of access it gives to our residents,” said Councilman Vagianos. “What I would love to see the council do is simply put it on the agenda. If it goes on the agenda, and it is voted down, I will not be raising it again and again,” urged Councilman Vagianos, acknowledging that “a fair vote is a fair vote.”

Magic Beans
He can’t get along with his neighbors.
Why is that the fault of those
Who live thousands of miles away?
He is enormously unpopular
With those who live beside him,
And yet he blames foreigners for his relationships.
He is short in stature
Yet wishes to tower above others,
Wishes to dominate those he's made smaller than he.
He feels surrounded,
He feels obliged to be heroic.
He feels anger, he lashes out
At innocent people;
He thinks he has the solution,
The magic beans
That will catapult
Him into the domineering
Skies of yesterday.
_____
A Man Of Power
He’s a lover
Not a fighter
Fighting for the people
He owns.
He’s ebony AND ivory,
A short man with a tall order:
He must receive
His uttered demands
Or else
The nuclear option
Will threaten
Ordinary people:
Those who surround him
With their everyday stature,
Reaching the heights of mundanity.
He wants what was,
What never was,
What will be
If he gets what
He believe he deserves,
And the coterie of martinets
Who support him
In whatever country
Coo, coo
His rank desires,
Coo, coo
His Napoleonic urges
Coo, coo
Saying
He deserves it all
Without any doubt
Whatsoever:
He's a brave man,
A man of power
With the most money,
A man who would kill many people
To grow a centimeter or two
In stature…
Peace
