Sacrifice
When you think about anything you want to change about yourself or the world around you, and ultimately you have to admit that a sacrifice must be made.
It’s been noted elsewhere:
Ken Kesey once said in an interview that Americans no longer know how to forebear. He was comparing the Baby Boomers and younger Americans to earlier generations. People who lived through the Flu of 1918, the Depression, and World War II knew sacrifice in their bones because they had so much firsthand experience with loss and hardship.
Mostly true. Though if you have ever had the time to speak with this “Greatest Generation” at length you would come to understand why they made their sacrifices. It wasn’t so they could post pictures on Instagram and Facebook. It was all done because they had no other options. They made their sacrifices with the hope that future generations would not be faced with the same perilous choices.
Good to be reminded of this selflessness as we see the pictures of this year’s RHS Distinguished Alumni Awards, and ponder a new class of honorees into the Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall Of Fame These are without a doubt two of the best endeavors which RHS alumni have created for teaching students to be good citizens. They both have at their cores examples for future generations to follow. They spotlight answers to the perennial question, “How do you achieve something of durable significance in your Life?”
The aforementioned alumni organizations consistently draw attention to the ability of their honoree’s ability to focus and their readiness to give up stuff.
I’m fine with parents giving children advantages with their money and business connections. Though more importantly, did they help their children answer the question of what is right and wrong? Did they provide them with a role model which values the belief in human dignity above what type of car you drive, the salary you earn or how many bathrooms your home has? These all pale in comparison to being shown how to stand up for what you believe to be true.
The lessons of the plaques of alumni on the walls of the main entrance to RHS and in the Gymnasium are all about how individuals have spent their time and what they believed to be important. They are well worth a look next time you visit our alma mater.

I'm telling ya...the 15 blocks between 57th street and 42nd street on 9th Avenue might be one of the coolest stretches of bars and restaurants in all the city.
Let's meet tomorrow and hit every one on the east side of the street and then meet on Sunday and hit every one on the west side of the street - that would be music to my beers.
Shot on 9th Avenue just north of 51st street looking south west into thick plastic with south east reflection.
Time 445pm.

The housing boom continues....
Two new houses going up on Glen east of Wilkes.. Remodel on Northern Pkwy (and I could hear ongoing construction nearby, but out of sight..) And a newly empty lot on Van Buren.. can't recall the house or two they tore down …

Did You Know…
Are you wondering why your favorite team didn't make it to the Sweet Sixteen? It might be because the players didn't get enough sleep before the game. Sleep affects speed, accuracy, mental focus, intensity, muscle recovery, and risk of injury. According to Dr. W. Christopher Winter, President of Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine, "Sleep is the most important thing in the world for an athlete. It is as important as food, hydration, and athletic preparation/conditioning." LeBron James is famous for getting 12 hours. He is in good company with other elite athletes like Justin Verlander, Roger Federer, Michael Phelps, and Usain Bolt who have figured out why coaches call sleep the new frontier in performance enhancement and their "secret weapon." Games are won and lost by split seconds, inches, one mental mistake. What coach wouldn't want their players at peak performance every time they compete? That's why many players wear wristbands to monitor the quantity and quality of their sleep, teams hire sleep specialists and install napping rooms to maximize sleep. The sleep specialist for the Washington Nationals got a World Series ring for her contribution to the win. The Celtics moved to a later practice start time and found that the team's free throw percentage went up. Sports schedules are often cited as an obstacle to later school start times but schools that have made the change haven't found any basis for those concerns and they are reaping the benefits!

Hopefully they are going to haul away all of that old sediment and rebuild the entire duck pond "watershed." It needs a better inlet and outlet, it needs to be deeper, and it needs more rock. Please keep the pond and make it a better habitat for the fish and the ducks.
