School Lunch Alfresco
When I attended Willard in the 1960s the norm was for students to go home for lunch. This is no longer an option, even with more parents working from home.
With changes in the labor market as background, today’s story I call School Lunch Alfresco. It comes Courtesy of Jason DeAllesi of Tap Into Ridgewood, and sounds like a no-brainer on the surface, but the devil is in the details.
The gist of the story concerns Ridgewood school parents’ reaction to the lack of a uniform policy allowing children the option of eating lunch outdoors. Hawes Elementary is one of the schools along with Ridge, Willard, and Travell that is not offering outdoor lunch. Orchard Elementary, Benjamin Franklin Middle School, George Washington Middle School, and Ridgewood High School are currently offering an outdoor option, with Somerville Elementary’s principal saying they will be next to implement the policy.
Digging further into the story you’ll discover that School Superintendent Tom Gorman, RHS 1987, admitted this situation is the result of not having enough personnel.
He has asked:
…parents to be patient as they searched for solutions to the lunch issue. Each classroom already has air purifiers, and the school will be receiving additional purifiers for the cafeterias and gymnasiums.
He also said that each school has its unique challenges, whether that be the limited area for tents and tables or the distance from the cafeteria to the would-be outdoor dining area.
I commend Tom for being on top of the issue and for knowing firsthand, as a Willard graduate himself, that there is no place outside at schools like Willard to eat lunch. Not unless you have the personnel to put up and take down tents on the athletic fields every day. We all know this is not going to happen.
My suggestion is to this lack of planning is to revisit all our school buildings and their early 20th century architectural style. What is obvious to anyone is that all new construction and additions to the original structures over the last 100 years have followed the same old pattern and simply added another floor or wing to an existing building. It never occurred to anyone that an outdoor pavilion might one day be needed. Our school architects seemingly forgot the lessons from the Pandemic of 1918 and built an entire system of schools which only contribute to the spread of the flu and other communicable diseases.
I understand it is late in the game to make major changes to our current buildings, besides outfitting them with more air purifiers. Maybe a fresh set of eyes will produce some architectural suggestions of more substance than I am qualified to offer. Sadly, had we better understood how viruses spread and that they would return every year in different variants we might have made different construction choices and be experiencing different results today.
I can hear Hemingway in the back of my mind, “Yes. Isn’t it pretty to think so.”

Halo Brass Taper Holder
M+A's glorious solid weighted brass Halo taper holders. Ours comes in two taper sizes. They look magical together and spectacular as a centerpiece grouping of many. The weight of the the brass makes this quite stable. When set aglow the halo naturally glows bright. It's pretty divine.
Solid weighted, shiny polished brass
Made in India
Accepts standard diameter tapers
Medium halo for 6-9" tapers
Large halo for 10" tapers
Care:
Carbon from taper will likely leave a mark on the halo then can be cleaned with dish detergent. Wash and then dry with a soft cloth immediately or white hard water stains may appear. Polish with a poultice of lemon and baking soda or ketchup (the acid will eat the natural oxidation of the material) or market product "Brasso." Do not touch ring close while candle is lit. Do not leave a flame unattended.
