Small Bookstore Day
October 9, 2021 is Small Bookstore Day. To say only one day is to be designated for this purpose misses the point. According to Jerry Seinfeld, “A bookstore is one of the only pieces of physical evidence we have that people are still thinking.” He jests, of course.
Amazon began as a book seller and then took over the retail world by removing all the friction from making purchases online. It couldn’t be easier to buy something on Amazon, now this means literally anything.
I will keep my Amazon account and am not suggesting you get rid of yours. I do want to call attention to some of their questionable business practices, which came along with the legendary ease of use. You can find these examples with a Google search, as their anti-union, high-stress, toxic workplaces are well documented. After reading about it and seeing it first hand, I’ll never forget them.
The same goes for AT+T. Remember when all you could rent were black rotary phones? Thank goodness that AT+T was broken up and their outrageous long distance fees are a thing of the past. Remember when people would quiet a room by saying they were on a long distance call? We were paying a fortune for this service long after better solutions like Voice Over Internet Protocol were available. AT+T was just like Amazon is now, and had no incentive to make changes to their business practices. Now it’s time to use our anti-trust laws on Amazon and create a government watchdog like the Food & Drug Administration to protect us from monopolies like Amazon.
Dave Eggers, author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and champion of small bookstores everywhere, offers his opinion about our shift to online retailing:
“I don’t think most people necessarily realize just how much an inhibiting species change this is – this overwhelming, constant, unavoidable surveillance,” he said recently, adding, “and it’s making us a far less interesting species and far more subservient to technology.”
Dave Eggers next book will not be offered on Amazon in hardcover. He is symbolically raising a middle finger at the corporate behemoth. To some this may seem like a futile gesture. His point is that the practice of focusing on maximizing shareholder value at all costs is a ruinous idea and not how corporations were ever intended to be operated.
This screed is about your credibility. Who do you follow, believe in, and know is doing right for everyone?
Let’s be more like those people who you regard as more concerned about society in general rather than a set of spreadsheets in particular. Demonstrate this by visiting a bookstore this week and be on the lookout for signs of intelligent life.
