The Experience & Wisdom Of Older Adults
The question I am asking myself today: How might we develop a mechanism for accessing the portfolio of experience and wisdom which older adults possess in abundance? In particular, RHS Alumni.
My first suggestion is to create projects which they would want to be a part of. Clearly, there are opportunities for both paid and unpaid work because it is false to assume that volunteering is the best or only method.
I suggest as an example project the digitization of the RHS collection of Arrow Yearbooks. Once a collection is gone the work to rebuild it would be immense. I have no idea what shape the current collection is in, only that it is extensive. It needs to be photographed and stored online for posterity.
By digitizing the Arrow Yearbooks we make them available online for public viewing in their original form. They would serve as a suitable record of each class. The rational for producing Arrow Yearbooks was said best in the Arrow Yearbook of 1937: to “amuse and instruct those only idly concerned.” In other words, future generations.
We could also annotate these books with the suggestions from each class. This second step might best be accomplished by creating a web site for each class, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself. When my plan to do this is ready, this forum will be the first to hear about it.
I want to use the examples of citizenship, scholarship, and teamwork included in the Arrow Yearbooks to help overcome end the Ageist bias so prevalent in our country. It is such a huge waste to be considered over the hill, too difficult to manage, won’t learn new things, and many others too silly to mention. Look around your office. How many men over the age of 50 work with you? It’s even worse for women. No excuse for any of this behavior.
A generation ago businesses saw a need for “institutional memory” and kept people employed so that their skills would not be lost. Today our business leaders think everything can be Googled and everybody can be reduced to a number on a spreadsheet. Sorry it doesn’t work that way in the long run. But they keep on trying despite the stunning failures of this flawed ideology to train the next generation of leaders, to successfully innovate solutions to our collective problems, and to end the scourge of loneliness that is rampant in all 50 states.

Dumplings
With Son #3 returning to college over the weekend, I have to squeeze in proper lunches using his favorite foods. Today it was steamed dumplings from “Fried Dumpling”, our long time place on Mosco Street in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Matthew Cortellesi may have his secret place, but the hole in the wall on Mosco also sells them frozen, and if you buy enough of them, they will survive the trip home. We felt 180 were sufficient while returning from Brooklyn last week.
There are dozens of ways to do a sauce, this is one of our quickies: mash a sliced nob of ginger, a few garlic cloves, a dash of sugar, and hot pepper in a mortar till smooth. Thin it out with soy sauce and let it sit while the dumplings steam.
We were able to enjoy a few minutes of calm while Frank Hahola was cutting the hay and the town was regrading our dirt road. It is always a beehive of activity here.

Passion Fruit
After searching locally all summer, finally scored a Passion Flower last week. This one is a perennial to boot. Will withstand temps to -20F. Looking forward to passion fruit recipes when the fruit ripens. #flowersmakemehappy #passionfruittoo
