The Maroon
A big thanks to my classmate Bob Rahm, RHS 1977, for inspiring the name change of this Ezine. We are now The Maroon. The new name gives the current events we direct to your attention a sharper focus & differentiates these happenings from the archives contained in our Maroons Online website.
Sometimes all it takes is a single email with an offer of his help & encouragement for change to occur. Thanks, Bob!
The masthead The Maroon reminds me of a time not so long ago when we had local newspapers that you could visit in-person. To me there was always a sense of excitement every time when I paid a visit to the Ridgewood News, or simple walked by. Something about them gathering the facts and then printing them for the world to see. It was an enterprise they took seriously as they were the journal of record for the town and surrounding areas. People still use newspapers to figure out what was going on at a certain point in history. They may not read them for current events but they remain archived in our libraries for future generations just the same.
I was a “stringer” in grade school for the Sunday edition of The Ridgewood News, and reported on the Little League games that took place at Willard School. Since these games took place in virtually my back yard it wasn’t so hard to gather the scores on the three games which took place on Saturdays and phone them in. No doubt this kindled my life long love of newspapers. It
Our name change, or rebranding if you will, pleases me no end as it signifies in a small way that we are part of an endeavor, which like the Ridgewood News & Bergen Record of my youth, feels obligated to capture a snapshot of the culture of our times. We may not get it exactly right or fully cover all the news but we do have our moments of satisfaction and try every time to uphold the fine tradition of what made local newspapers important for so long.

The Happy Pig
Doing some research on Arthur Avenue for the cheese shop and as I exit the Calabria Pork Store...I am taken back by the happy pig in the window who seems to have tears of joy - you know...happy pigs make happy Salumi.
Shot through the window with condensation looking west across Arthur Avenue.
Time 1030am.

About The Life They Want To Live
When I see that the bathrooms at school
Have been vandalized again
The paper towel dispenser ripped
From the wall
The toilets clogged intentionally
With all manner of paper…
The faucets turned to dispense water
Onto the innocent floor tiles…
I think of the insurrection
At the capitol building,
Broken windows,
Feet on desks,
The flags,
The costuming…
Or the truckers revving their engines
In the streets of Ottawa,
The people not sure
What they’re protesting
But nonetheless PROUD -
Feeling pride at their freedom
To throw random wrenches,
Varieties of gum,
Into the workings other people depend on,
People who just want to go
Home to their families and
Have a quiet night,
Maybe play some cards,
Stay healthy,
So they can actually
Give a shit
About the life they want to live
Tomorrow.
