The New Journalism
Ridgewood High School used to teach students to be journalists. It was, and remains, an honorable profession. Journalists, whether they wrote for local papers or for the national ones, were often given wide latitude to pursue stories wherever they might lead.
This career path doesn’t often lead to fame and fortune like Woodward & Bernstein (Watergate), but it does offer the satisfaction that you are working to give your fellow citizens the plain facts.
Plain facts used to be widely thought of as what newspapers printed and to a lesser extent what TV & radio news programs presented. Unfortunately, these mediums were all vanquished by the Internet. Now journalism is mostly a gig job or a serious hobby. People still do get paid to be newspaper journalists, just a lot fewer than when Classified Ads subsidized the price of each newspaper. And nobody watches TV or listens to terrestrial radio (AM/FM) for their news, and news presenters haven’t been considered journalists for decades. Why would anyone think a person reading off a teleprompter has any facts worth reckoning, when their phone can do the same thing whenever they want. Appointment viewing or listening doesn’t satisfy anyone these days.
I miss the days when our miscues and faux pas could be read in local papers, even those as humble as the Ridgewood High School High Times student newspaper. We are certainly the poorer for the loss in number & variety of this type institution.
We use the medieval term “Fourth Estate” to describe the type of influence journalists possess, their capacity for advocacy, and their ability to frame an issue for a political discussion. Now we live in a world where:
“those with no experience, no firsthand knowledge, bloviate, and it's accepted as the truth.”
Hard to know what to believe unless you work at it. Trust in all forms of media is not easily come by. When I start feeling too comfortable with a source of information I sometimes do a fact-check to see if they are stretching the truth. I always feel a curious sense of delight when a fraud is appears in action. The TV, Radio, and Podcast worlds are full of them.

Today we tested the pizza oven and wouldn't you know it...brother Paul got the first pie - I wonder how that happened.

GRAB & GO UPDATE!
So last night the council moved to extend G&G for one month to 5/31/22 while they process the Mayor's request for additional information (fyi it is only 13 spots so unsure of what the hold up truly is). Grateful to Pamela Perron who pushed for a six month extension so businesses and the community could plan; but that did not fly. Stay tuned.

Escalante
I've never been to Escalante, Utah.
I like Escalante.
The only sound is wind
In the junipers.
Wind made the cliffs
That shine in the distance.
Grain by grain
Sand of eroded mountains
Made new rocks,
Thick and deep.
Streams sculpted the landscape
Where scrub jays,
Slowly now,
Dot the pines
With blue.
