The Paradox Of Social Media
Breaking up technology companies via existing anti-trust laws is in the news. We have used these laws before to break up oil companies and telephone companies. Standard Oil and AT+T were broken up into new companies which thrived mightily after the breakup.
We have also used regulations to protect our physical health via the FDA for food and drugs. Though it’s concerning that we don't use these same measures to protect mental health.
It appears we need a 21st century look at how companies like Facebook & Instagram influence the well being of people, especially impressionable teenagers.
The paradox inherent in social media is that we use it most often when we are excited, outraged, or incensed, and these emotional states of mind produce the biggest responses and the most money for social media owners.
Gossip on steroids is social media at its core. And it's a free-for-all. Anybody can post anything, and Facebook bumps that which gets a reaction, the aforementioned juicy gossip. If you want to get the truth, you've got to pay for it. -Lefsetz
I’m very pleased that mental is on the lips of teachers and administrators in Ridgewood Public Schools. Can more be done? Of course, but the fact is they have seen the damage firsthand of students posting about each other on Instagram, even videoing nasty, brutish fistfights. One look at this and they became even more determined to keep it from getting out of hand. This says quite a bit about their sincerity and veracity. More important is that it sets an example of things we won’t tolerate letting happen to the psyches of our children. They are the future and need our protection, not just from poisoned food but from poisonous ideas and practices.

Inside Sherwood
While Sherwood is far from complete (it will likely be my life project) we are starting to see it being used as I have long envisioned.
Today we were able to prototype and cut the parts needed by our local “Meals On Wheels.” They use soapstone blocks that are heated in an oven to keep the meals warm during transport. The blocks are then held within cardboard frames that fit the bottom of coolers with the meals stacked above. We were cutting the parts needed to build a new set of the frames.
Much fun, a wee bit of engineering, and the opportunity to make use of our collective gifts.

Care:
Brass: If a patina is desired, just let the metal oxidize naturally and sit back and enjoy the show. For a polished brass finish clean brass components with a paste of baking soda and lemon juice; work the paste on with a soft cloth and rub in one direction; rinse and buff with a soft dry cloth. There is also a market product called "Brasso" that cleans brass really quickly.
Matte Black Powder-coated Brass: Clean with a damp cloth and wipe dry with a clean cloth.

It’s not too often that you find an attractive building like this without any utility poles or transmission lines in the frame. Add in a freshly mowed lawn and some spectacular clouds, and it makes for an eye catching image.
