The Unnoticed Good
With Spring fast approaching, I begin my annual search for the unnoticed signs that Winter is over. Crocus are fine indicators and can emerge suddenly just when you thought you couldn’t stand another day of cold, dark skies. Crocus will appear then have a foot of snow fall on them, only to re-surface when the snow melts. Just like nothing had happened to them. Talk about perseverance.
Then we have the postcards, or more correctly email, from people living in warmer climates. This is another sure sign of Spring. If you scroll to the bottom of this missive you will see a classic picture of some of my RHS pals having a nice evening together in Sarasota, Florida.
I’m pretty sure I couldn’t endure the heat of a year-round Florida lifestyle, but I give these guys credit for knowing that in February it’s cold here in my part of the shire in Queens. We can agree to disagree on whether it is better to prefer viewing the four seasons from a close-up perspective.
For instance, it won’t be too long before things like the volunteer flowers and herbs will make an appearance in my backyard garden. People strolling past my corner garden will make comments about them and other features which catch their fancy. They see me working the soil or simply sitting in the shade taking in the day and feel compelled to compliment my work or remark on the weather. It always reminds me of the truth in the proverb, “Good fences make good neighbors.” If I didn’t have a four foot high fence I would surely want one, if only to keep the dogs from digging things up. I love dogs but have enough of a fight with the birds, squirrels, and mosquitos who can’t be deterred by any height of fence. Though I have discovered that planting mint and marigolds everywhere does help with the bugs. I crush the flowers and leaves in my hands everyday. It repels the bugs keen to be around me while I garden. I swear this works. Try it!

A New York Story
I never set to to take a particular picture but life like itself...we find often ourselves in places and with people we love.
Here I am on a cold morning at the east river staring into the carousel and although there are no people...it is a sight I truly love.
Shot into the glass of Jane's Carousel with lights and bunting, the Frank Gehry building, the west tower of the Brooklyn Bridge and World Trade Center 1.
Time 845am.

Looking across a frozen Sturgeon Bay at a dozen or so lake freighters from the Great Lakes fleet. They are tied up at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, WI for winter layup. Most of them will be here until late March because, with the Soo Locks closed until March 25, these ships have nowhere to go. They look kind of small in this photo, but when you're up close to one of them, oh boy.
In the background, under that crane in the center of the photo, is the bow of the still under construction “Mark W. Barker.” She’s a River Class boat, and the first Great Lakes freighter to actually be built on the Great Lakes in 35 years. She was launched last fall, but still needs a bit of work. Completion is expected in the summer of 2022.
This photo was taken from Shipwreck Point, in Sturgeon Bay. 10 degrees with a stiff breeze. Brrr.

It started when we were young.
We were just two kids having fun.
I was captivated by you and the glances you always threw.
I was obsessed with the way you smiled.
And the way your messy hair was styled.
I thought of you all the time,
Hearing every love song,
And every rhyme.
As we grew into the people we are today,
We made a vow to always stay that way.
Forever bonded at the heart,
You’re my best friend and always have been from the start.
We were just two kids when we met,
And since you, I’ve had no regrets.
You have filled my heart with immeasurable joy,
Even when you decide to play it coy.
Sometimes I wish we could go back to when things weren’t so complicated.
I wish we could go back to Just two Kids.
