The Willard Way
Feeling very grateful to Michele Eng of Ridge School for all her work in collecting the histories of each of the Ridgewood Schools. It’s all there in the building just waiting for someone to ask for a look. Michele is doing the asking and my classmate Anne Robinson is forwarding it to me for safe keeping. Anne keeps saying to save it for the Ridgewood Museum of Schools and I heartily agree.
Anne and I both attended Willard School before the nicknames of Owls and Panthers were added. We both experienced the Willard Way in its earliest incarnation. Gene Ricci coined the phrase and back when it began The Willard Way was how they separated 6th graders for Mathematics instruction. It was done it such a manner that nobody felt stupid or elite. Mr Ricci was simply the best teacher of Math and provided us with a course of study that still makes me shake my head in wonder. Consider that he taught us in 1970-1971 to count in decimal (0s and 1s). He began this lesson with the caveat that he had no idea what it would be used for in the future. If he had lived past 1978 he might have been stunned to see that it had become the basis for the Internet.
While I’m feeling happy about all of Michele Eng’s discoveries, I am also feeling grateful for my early participation in The Willard Way. It remind me that when we feel a sense community and connection that we make moves which propel us forward. We may be promoted to the next grade or graduated from an elite institution. We may achieve distinction in our careers by a rise in rank or seniority. We may even be honored for a lifetime of civic accomplishments by being included among the distinguished of our society. Though we can never do anything of much significance alone. It is always the companionship, camaraderie, and bonhomie which is the most telling indicator of our progress.

History Of Willard and Travell
Bravo to Michele Eng! She is the Library Media Specialist, Technology Innovation Specialist, School Testing Coordinator and Cambodia Club Advisor at Ridge School.
Michele has been contacting all the elementary schools to solicit documents about the history of these institutions. Today we added Willard and Travell to the Maroons Online website.

Slave To Fashion
I have always been a slave to fashion.
I may not have the walk of the fashion industry’s runway models, but I know fashion when I see it.
Today we did a series of videos documenting proper Personal Protective Equipment in a COVID environment and I got the nod to be the model. I won out due to my height - probably the only time in my life that it made a difference, the runner-up was under 5’ tall and looked more ridiculous than I did in the Tyvek Bunny Suit.
The unit I’m wearing is one of the Powered Air Purifying Respirators that I’ve been working with during my ongoing redeployment at the hospital.
