Title IX
An early Happy Birthday to Title IX!
Title IX is a federal civil rights law in the United States of America that was passed as part of the Education Amendments of 1972. It prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or other education program that receives funding from the federal government.
On June 23, 2022 it will have been 50 years since the Title IX law was signed. It paved the way for girls & women to be given the same athletic opportunities provided to boys & men. This came to mean that athletic programs needed to provide equal funding to female athletes.
The outcomes of Title IX have been wildly successful. The girls’ & women’s games are played with the same ardor and intensity which have always characterized the male versions.
I am a big fan of Women’s College Basketball because they play the game with the same fundamentals I learned, combined with a grace we were incapable of. For instance, there is nothing wrong in a championship game for one player to help a player from the other team get up off the floor. This is unheard of in male basketball leagues. Assisting an opponent in even the slightest way is a sign of weakness, instead of a true sign of sportsmanship. We often give lip service to courtesy & fair play in athletics but boys are mostly taught to honor it in the breach.
Hopefully Title IX will be interpreted in the future to allow a clear path for participation by transgender athletes. Instead of restricting them we’ll aim for fairness and to include them. Transgender athletes just want a chance to compete like everybody else, and that is what Title IX has been doing these last fifty years.

A Hundred Thousand Raindrops
Not a sound besides the soft tickle of a hundred thousand raindrops - even if you not ticklish...you gotta giggle.

Rock Hound
What to do when the days stay cold and dreary, the winds are never weary, and you’ve got more rocks than you know what to do with? Make a rock bowl with super glue! Having very little experience with super glue, I learned a few things about its “enduring” qualities. The bowl looks kind of cool though.

Around The Village
Wanted to share this as it sounds like an awesome opportunity for citizens to be heard which is invaluable to any public process. Thank you Pamela Perron for always sharing and welcoming Ridgewood's input into these important initiatives.
Pamela Perron, Ridgewood Councilwoman
This is really important, and we need residents' help. As you may know, the Village is in the process of creating a new Master Plan and has hired the Land Conservancy of New Jersey (LCNJ) to draft the Open Space section of that document. Barbara Davis, VP Programs LCNJ, will be speaking at the joint Open Space Committee and Parks & Recreation Conservation Board meeting on April 21st, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in Village Hall, 1st fl. Youth Lounge. The public is invited, too. Ms. Davis will not be presenting a draft document, but she is requesting residents’ input. To that end, Ms. Davis asks that residents e-mail her their input regarding the Need/Demand for open space and recreational facilities. Residents are the boots on the ground; therefore, she would like to receive their views on what specifically Ridgewood needs going forward. Please e-mail her at bhdavis@tlc-nj.org with your observations/suggestions no later than April 14th so that she can analyze what we Need.
Note, duplicate suggestions are fine. Also, for this exercise, we don’t have to get bogged down with funding questions.
Thank you for in advance for your input. With your help, we can create a Master Plan that is a truly useful tool for the future.
