RHS Distinguished Alumni Award
*****Last Issue Of 2022*****
This is one idea that deserves the attention of the entire alumni community. The RHS Distinguished Alumni Award was revived in 2016 by the Ridgewood High School Alumni Association (RHSAA) to much acclaim. The receptions for the honorees are heartfelt and well attended.
Though it is curious that there are now 7 questions you must answer to nominate someone, with the seventh being a true head scratcher:
“Are you aware of any incident or circumstance involving the candidate that would potentially tarnish the reputation of the RHS Alumni Association if he/she were selected?”
Sounds a little bit like they want an FBI background check, right?
The process for making a nomination was not always so off-putting. I remember nominating Stephanie Jones in 2016 and my heart swelled with pride as I listed all the acomplishments of my friend. I didn’t have to think about whether or not she had ever committed an incident that would “tarnish the reputation” of the RHSAA. Given the non-responses I have received to my suggestions over the last few years, I would say the reputation of the RHSAA can’t get much worse.
They have also changed the award to limit it to 4 recipients every two years. The first class in 2008 had no such limit. Why is there a limit in the first place?
Maybe the RHSAA could follow the lead of the best run alumni organization associated with RHS, The RHS Athletic Hall of Fame. They simply use a bigger facility to accomodate a larger group of deserving individuals. There is no reason that the RHSAA couldn’t do the same. Heaven knows they are more than 4 individuals who are worthy of this honor.

You’re Saying It Wrong
just deserts
“As for the ‘cowards’ and ‘opportunists’ who aided and abetted Trump, there will be a day of reckoning when they will get their just desserts, we are told.”—WASHINGTON EXAMINER
Ice cream or cake? It should be “just deserts” not “just desserts.” It’s only a silly little s but persnickety types like us don’t approve of that extra sibilant. The desert part means neither tasty desserts nor those dry sandy places. Instead, desert means “deserved,” and so just deserts means “justly or rightly deserved.”
