Seasons Change
When I was growing up Labor Day was the last day of summer vacation before schools began. Whether it was public schools or colleges there was mostly agreement on the idea of starting classes after the Labor Day holiday. Likely this had to do with a lack of air-conditioning in schools and college dormitories. Now Child Protective Services would be notified if a child had to sit in a sweltering classroom.
Nobody in those halycon days would have imagined classes beginning in August, especially in the southern portions of these United States. We all shared more of a common rhythm back then which allowed businesses that relied on college & high school students to remain mostly fully staffed through the end of August.
On the first day of public school all the boys wore shorts. Then as the weather started to grow cooler the inevitable switch to long pants began. The last person wearing shorts was usually looked at as a bit of a rebel or a chucklehead if it rained and/or was chilly.
I wish I could say most schools in these United States have been modernized enough to accomodate air-conditioners, like they have in Ridgewood. There was nothing worse than trying to wish a breeze through an open window or peeling oneself off of a school chair on what were then considered hot days.
In our current climate cities like Baltimore and Denver have to close their schools, which still don’t have air-conditioners, when the temperature inside reaches 85 degrees. I can’t recall ever hearing a discussion about the temperature of a school when I was in K-12. When it was hot our teachers would attempt to teach the day’s lesson, usually this involved turning off the lights and moving slowly or not at all. Though when these valiant efforts appeared to be failing to grab our attentions, they would fall back on their training and teach by example an old-fashioned thing called grace. Not in the biblical sense but in the sense of how they showed their propriety under duress.

Dance Ten Looks Three
Looking into a poster on the outside wall of the NY City Ballet...I notice a group of kids working on a routine in the plaza perhaps hoping one.day themselves to be not only on the poster but dancing inside.
Shot looking south with north facing reflection and David Geffin hall in distance.
Time 430pm.

ameliorate
“A couple of blocks away from the shelter, lawmakers on Capital Hill this year passed a budget in which massive cuts were quietly made to teh programmed that attempt to ameliorate the number of Americans sleeping rough or moving from place to place.”
—THE GUARDIAN, US EDITION
Ameliorate means “to make better.” So let’s ameliorate our knowledge about the word.
All too often, as in the example above, people think ameliorate means “to lessen.” This mistake is very common: doing a quick Google search, we found hundreds of phrases in which ameliorate was used when lessen, reduce, or alleviate should have been used instead.
