You’re Saying It Wrong
We slipped in a new team of writers a few weeks ago, Kathy & Ross Petras. This sister and brother combination are also RHS 1976 & 1974. Besides being urbane, polished and witty they keep me honest when editing The Maroon. Hope you scroll down and read about their many books and their podcast.

The Treaty Of Corona
It poured raindrops the size of grapes for about 6 minutes...there was no place for me to find shelter so I just stood there and when the rain was done...it was just me, the blue sky and the Unisphere and we all stared at eachother for a few minutes and then we smiled, nodded and all made peace and I took this so we three could remember this most excellent moment.
Shot looking west.

Did You Know…
Survey Results
By Dr. Anne Robinson
Did you know that the results of the district survey on Later School Start Time (LSST) initiated a year ago were finally presented at last week's BOE meeting? The representative from K12 Insight, the survey firm chosen by the district, shared the data admitting that they had not done many surveys like this before. Some BOE members seemed to be realizing for the first time what most of you noted as you completed the survey: many of the questions were worded in a way that made them impossible to answer. In addition, the suggestion by some BOE members that a LSST might not be necessary if students received less homework indicated that they had not done their homework and still did not understand the science behind LSST.
Yet, with all of the confusion, students, parents, teachers, and community members made it clear that they are open to the change with less than 25% of parents indicating that they would find it difficult to accommodate the change to a later start time or end time. In fact, the Ridgewood community demonstrated that they are better educated on the benefits of LSST than most of the communities that have already made the change with the vast majority of parents and students responding that LSST would have a positive impact on the students' general health and well-being, focus, attention, motivation, creativity, energy level, rates of tardiness, and absenteeism. All of you who have acted as ambassadors for LSST in a multitude of ways over the years should feel proud of the difference you've made!
A survey is only as good as the questions asked and the information respondents have to answer them. Questions can be asked in such a way that the results are skewed in favor of any outcome you choose. For example, if respondents had known that RHS Principal, Jeff Nyhuis had proposed a schedule in which only 51 seconds of instructional time would be shaved off of each class period to have a start time of 8:30 and end time of 3:05, clearly the responses would have been different regarding how comfortable people are with a reduction in instructional time. An excellent public comment to this effect by Anne Burton Walsh at last week's meeting can be found on the BOE webcast (2:12:25-2:16:38) —Ridgewood BOE Meeting 9/19/2022
Meanwhile, throughout this year-long delay, all work on LSST in the district came to a halt. The last Alternative Schedules Task Force meeting was in January. There was no work being done behind the scenes, as many of you had hoped there would be, to ensure that LSST would be in place this September. So, for yet another year, the district missed the mark.
As the BOE debated the merits of creating a timeframe for selecting a superintendent in last week's meeting, it became apparent that our BOE is challenged when it comes to setting timelines and schedules with an end date. We are hopeful that Dr. Fitts will create a schedule, as he suggested he would in our meeting, that brings us to the end goal of protecting student health, well-being, safety, and achievement. Please continue to let him know that he has your support. Thank you!

Anderson Dock in Ephraim Harbor, Ephraim, WI. This afternoon, a low pressure system blossomed quickly, creating a crazy northwest wind and thick clouds. Around sunset an opening appeared in the clouds and allowed me to take a few pictures without the lens getting raindrops on it.
