The Duck Pond
Recent work at the Ridgewood Duck Pond has restored a long time treasure of the Village. Through the years this man-made pond has had its good and bad times, mostly from sediment which caused unstable water levels and turned the water murky It was originally created in the 1920s for the production of ice and was made a County Park in the 1950s.
At one point it was a year round attraction and ice skating was allowed when conditions permitted. Though mostly it is simply a nice place to walk around and sit on one of the many benches, or to have a picnic in one of the pavilions in the park area behind the pond.
The water is clear now and the fountains in the center of the pond are lit with colored lights at night. Its a landmark which reminds those who visit of a simpler era. Glad to see the vision of Bergen County is still focused on making the area a pleasant place to live or simply visit.

Currywurst
Deb and I worked the fire department Oktoberfest over the weekend and there were a few weisswursts left over. This gave me the opportunity to whip up an odd yet old favorite accompaniment to these little veal bratwursts. In Germany these are a quick street food that is more popular in the north, as I don’t recall it from my time bartending south of Munich. It is quick to make, and best prepared the day before so that the mustard seeds have time to fully plump up. Warm it up if made ahead of time.
Fine mince or run through a food processor, a small onion. Sauté it along with about a teaspoon of dried mustard seeds until the onion begins to color Toss in a tablespoon of curry powder, a long healthy grind of black pepper, and a dash of nutmeg. Let the spices bloom for about a minute stirring as able, then add in a cup of ketchup and let it simmer, stirring as needed to avoid sticking, for about 10 minutes . Grill, your weisswursts or other brats, and then slice into thin coins. Pour over enough of the curry sauce as you wish, mix it all up and pick at them with toothpicks.
By the way, I have a long considered mustard seed as being vegetarian caviar. In this case, the mustard seeds are little surprise pops of texture and flavor within the sauce. You can substitute Coleman Mustard powder, but then you miss out on the texture.
And finally … share with friends.

It’s more than a puddle, but not quite a pond. Everywhere in the woods today, the sun was throwing down yellow.

Around The Village
Thank you Bergen County for restoring our beautiful Ridgewood Duck Pond to all its glory. Congratulations Ramon Hache on completing this important project. Class of 1991 gets it done.

You’re Saying It Wrong
barter / haggle
“In some countries, vendors are less interested in the haggle. In general, shop owners are less likely to be bartered down than sellers in market booths.” —AIRTREKS WEBSITE, ON HAGGLING FOR RUGS
This is an interesting example. In the first sentence, the writer gets its right: when you’re bargaining over the price of a rug, you’re haggling. In the second sentence, the writer gets it wrong. Bartering is not haggling— it’s trading, exchanging goods or services without using money.
