On my recent trip to Duluth, instead of the usual adventures up the north shore of Lake Superior to Grand Portage, I decided to head the other way and explore areas around the St Louis River. The St. Louis River is Lake Superior’s largest tributary.
This particular overlook is right along Hwy 210, at Oldenburg Point and Jay Cooke State Park. Ten years ago, this area was heavily impacted by a flood. A few hundred yards behind where I’m standing, and up a steep hill, is Forbay Lake. The torrential rains caused a dike that holds back the lake to break. A cascade of water came rushing down and wiped out a large area of forest, and created a gorge and a little stream that was not there before. The highway was also wiped out, and has since been replaced with a really nice bridge that crosses the new gorge and stream.
Against my better judgement and the “Trail Closed” sign, I climbed down the side of the gorge to check out the river. Once down there, there was nowhere to go. What you see above the water is also below the water. I couldn’t walk along the shore of the river, and I couldn’t walk out into the river either, even is shallow areas. There were just too many large rocks, and all of them had angled surfaces. So I turned around and climbed back up, taking a different route. This river is wild and crazy, and I found it a bit intimidating.
One interesting thing about the Duluth area is that it is near a triple divide. The St. Louis River and Duluth are part of the Great Lakes, St Lawrence River and Atlantic Ocean watershed. A few miles south of Duluth, the water flows into the Mississippi River and ends up in the Gulf of Mexico. And not too far north of Duluth is the divide where the water on the other side flows into Hudson Bay and enters the Atlantic up near Greenland.

Yesterday high school year book quotes came up. Thirty-one years later I still love mine. Thank you to everyone for all the love and support. I am extraordinarily lucky to have such great friends.

You’re Saying It Wrong
farther / further
“But according to the small business investor and turnaround king Marcus Lemonis, that couldn’t be farther from the truth.” —CNBC.COM
Let’s cut to the chase before we go any further… or further. (1) Which one is it? (2) Furthermore (sorry), does it matter? The short answers: (1) In the case of the phrase “further from the truth,” further is preferred. (2) It depends.
