Election Day
Bring a friend or two.
I vote early. I won’t tell you how to vote; most people have decided already.
Just like jury duty this is one of our responsibilities as a member of a well ordered society. We hear a lot of talk about Rights. Most people know we have a Bill Of Rights. Too bad we don’t have a Bill Of Responsibilities. It would come in handy during heated discussions about the current state of affairs and what each party might do if elected.
I won’t make any predictions about our national elections, better known as the Midterms. The results will hinge upon how many people get out and vote. The weather plays a huge role as not too many people will wait in the rain to vote. The radar map for the nation looks free of severe storms and the weather in my neck of the woods foretells a mild, November day.
Don’t expect election results by the end of the day on Tuesday. Those days are long gone now that candidates run on the platform that any election they lose must be rigged. All probity went out the window when the last occupant of the White House wouldn’t accept the results, even two years later and after his party’s leaders said the results were conclusive. This sets a very bad precedent. Now candidates from both major parties promote false conspiracy theories and make baseless accusations about the legitimacy of election results.
There is no shame in admitting defeat. What’s more, simply by running for elected office an individual has checked off a box on the list of Civic Responsibilities we all rely upon. Our Democracy needs more good losers and fewer boastful winners. We are all in this together.

Around The Village
Schedler Information Update. As you all know I am a fan of facts and information, so I wanted to share a couple of things with you all. According to official Village information, Schedler is not even close to being on schedule and on budget. What was supposed to be completed in 2020, was barely started in 2018 and effectively has been dormant ever since.
But don’t just take my word for it. In late 2017, Council publicly approved a plan for the Schedler Park that was proposed by a committee that included residents and two Council members. You can see that plan here: https://www.ridgewoodnj.net/.../1677-schedler-ad-hoc... . During and following that process, Council set a three year schedule with completion slated for 2020 (and substantial completion well before that). That is reflected in the February 23, 2018 Capital Budget Request for the Park issued by the Village, which shows the total cost by Phase, with scheduled completion of the last phase in 2020. (yes, I watch and attend budget meetings:))
The first phase of the Park (listed as Phase II, with Phase I not relating to the Park) was set for completion in 2018, and included clearing the site, installing all underground utilities (sewage, water, gas, lighting), constructing the driveway, parking lot, and sidewalk, installing park benches, grading the athletic playing field, and installing a guardrail on Rt. 17 and a berm adjacent to Rt. 17.
NONE of that has been completed – in fact, almost all of it has not even been started yet save the berm. Phases III was scheduled for completion in 2019 and included installing the playground, restrooms, and streetscaping. None of it has even been started yet. Phase IV, the final phase, included installing the actual athletic playing field. It has not even been started yet. If you would like to see for yourself what the Park that was supposed to be completed two years ago looks like now, you can visit follow me on Instagram for a video from this September.
Additionally the Village did submit (outside of council approval) two other plans that were both rejected; one for over-development and the other for historical inaccuracies such as the Mayor's addition of a Pergola. Viewed here. https://www.ridgewoodnj.net/.../2019.09.17Schedler...
Additional at the December 9th, 2021 VC meeting there was confusion within the council about the status of the project. However, the Village Manager confirmed the Village did not even have approval for 2/3 of the project only the berm. https://www.tapinto.net/.../schedler-confusion-among...
As you all know I very much believe that developing the field, pathway and playscape would have benefited the community the most and responded to the harsh flooding reality we have seen as a community as Schedler is high, dry land. Hope this information sheds some sunlight on where we are with respect to this multi-million dollar project a decade and change after we purchased it.

You’re Saying It Wrong
elicit / illicit
“Evidence based policy for elicit drugs.” -BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL
In the very next issue, the British Medical Journal ran this correction: “An editorial error late in the production of this editorial by Evan Wood…led to a particularly egregious typo in the title. This should, of course, be ‘Evidence based policy for illicit drugs.’ Ouch.”
To ease the pain a bit, it’s an easy error to make —elicit and illicit sound almost alike although they’re far apart in meaning. Elicit is a verb, meaning to draw out or call forth a response, information or reaaction.” Illicit is an adjective, meaning “unlawful” or against societal norms or morality.”
