Thanksgiving Rituals
Progress is a fragile and rituals like those at Thanksgiving offer us solace when our nation’s progress or our own seems stunted.
There are Thanksgiving rituals of days gone by (like the old Ridgewood-Fairlawn football rivalry) and some that endure like the Turkey Bowl football game over at Glen School. Football and Turkey are an inseparable part of the Thanksgiving landscape. The National Fottball League now broadcasts four games during the course of the day.
I prefer to concentrate more on the side dish traditions of the actual Thanksgiving meal. Whether it is a stuffing recipe handed down through the family or the dish of scalloped oysters my Mom regularly prepared and which made me a fresh oyster fan for life. Side dishes are always part of the Thanksgiving conversation. I think this is because people celebrate Thanksgiving by suggesting that everyone bring a dish. The host then assigns dishes based upon preferences and whether the person is known for one in particular.
Watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade on TV or Laurel & Hardy starring in The March of the Wooden Soldiers were also two more traditions from my childhood. This sort of appointment TV watching is no longer in vogue but at one time in post-WWII America they were shared rituals in many households. Now the entertainment options are so plentiful that sharing the same experiences is not deemed as important.
This Thanksgiving I’m spending in Ridgewood with a houseful of my wife’s in-laws. We’re bringing our dog Burley and a stick of sopressata to be included in the pre-meal appetizers. The other guests depending upon their culinary skills will make familiar side dishes. A football game will be on the TV set all day long. Hopefully, the traffic on the roads won’t be too bad. We’ll no doubt all offer a solemn prayer for the victims of the latest rounds of mass shootings. It’s not a Thanksgiving ritual but one we see more and more. These events shake our confidence and make us fearful of going out.
Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving! The rituals you perform and recognize will make your day much more pleasant.

The Man With The Blue Heart
Ha...that man is actually me standing on the platform as the number 6 train pulls into the station and the blue heart...well...that's an emergency call box on the opposite platform but why have reality get between you and a good title.

“Yet, Tories subliminally elide these changes with teh collapse of civilization as we know it.” —THE GUARDIAN, US EDITION
Elide means “to omit,” not “to conflate,” not more colloquially, “to mush together,” yet it is getting more and more common to use it in the “mush together” way.
