Observer
Walt Whitman
Our American 19th century cohort of most noteworthy male writers taught to me at RHS includes Whitman, Emerson, Thoreau, & Twain. Only Walt Whitman has a rest stop named after him on the NJ Turnpike, Southbound, mile marker 31.
I didn’t receive much instruction in high school or college in female writers. This did occur to me while I was attending college and I once asked my favorite English Professor, “Why there weren’t more women in the Norton Anthology of English Literature?” He replied most respectfully, “there weren’t that many.” He meant there wasn’t much evidence of what they might have accomplished. We didn’t have the Internet to bring to our attention the many female writers of the 19th century. Given this limitation we mostly studied the men. It will take a while for the women to catch up, as well as all the cultures & ethnic groups which now infuse our country with a welcome bit of diversity.
I’ll probably never comprehend the breadth and depth of the contributions that were made and continue to be authored now outside the pantheon of male writers I studied and continue to re-read. Undoubtably, I’ll also miss the arguments about renaming the rest stops on the NJ Turnpike. Given how litigious our society has become, there will be a call for a more inclusive group of dignitaries, no matter the confusion a name change would be for travelers.

Rock Hound
It's our last night with the kiddos, so Mav and I decided to head down to the Tennessee River for some barge watching at sunset. Saw one small towboat, and a beautiful sunset.
