Tools & Toys
Dear Village Council,
Their are 21st century software tools no public or private organization can operate without. Sadly, the new Village Council has only been given toys with which to do their important jobs: laptops & email addresses. Fortunately, you also have a first rate video broadcasting system so that residents near & far can watch, contribute, and in my case make educated observations.
With that said as an introduction, I’m casting no aspersions upon the Village IT department. Let’s repeat that: Hey, IT it’s not your fault!
Now, I can make suggestions based upon my 30 year background in the computer networking field without having to say I’m sorry to anyone.
The Village Council needs internal communication tools to facilitate their work. Email is fine but not enough. I suggest two tools:
Slack. This tool will allow the Council to organize their conversations, their standard operating procedures, and keep in one central location a shared view of the work they are doing.
Trello. This tool gives a clear view of who’s doing what and what needs to get done. It measures progress and shows the status of initiatives.
Please start with these two tools (Slack & Trello). Authorize money for someone to train you and the Village IT staff. The software is free and can later be purchased if you find it useful.
Please also authorize money to purchase the latest generation I-phone. Make sure you have a cellular plan with plenty of data (do not use public Wi-Fi, EVER). The above suggested programs can be run on your phone and accessed anywhere on the web.
I’ll add one more tool to the list: 1Password. It is a password manager. It can reside on your new phones and keep everyone from re-using passwords or writing them down on sticky notes attached to your computer screen.
If this seems excessive to anyone, please remember the previous council spent $24,000 on noise abatement for Pickleball courts. Spending tax dollars on tools instead of toys makes good sense in the 21st century.
Keep up the good work and thank you for your fine responsiveness to date.

Sometimes you just feel connected to a place.
This incomparable beauty across from Citizens Park was built in 1880.
My loving fieldstones is no secret, but come on.
They don't make chimneys like that anymore.
It's also my earliest Halloween memory.
Holding my mother's hand and the "wonder" walking through the front door. It was truly like stepping back in time into a castle or fairytale.
And that was over 2 score and 10 odd or more ago.
(Just thinking about it.. did they have a second floor ballroom..? Oh, and.. I was a 70's kid.. Munsters/Addams Family much?

News From The Village Mayor’s Office
Last week, we had unusually warm weather. In fact, it was perfect weather for enjoying a lunch outside in the central business district. Last week, the council reinstated outdoor cafes for 12 months each year. We're moving in the right direction to support our local businesses and provide our community a downtown to fully enjoy the full year.

A good snow cover, then a recent warmer day with some rain, and then below freezing temps again, have created lots of ice at Council Grounds State Park. It’s tough to walk anywhere without ice cleats. There’s also lots of big and small white pine branches broken from December’s heavy, wet snowstorm, and laying on the ground. This little white pine twig got frozen in at the river’s edge. Green pine needles and brown oak leaves are about the only colors you can find out there these days.
