Maroon Athletic History
The past is easily forgotten. Never so much as with Maroon Athletic history.
(Ridgewood High School Hall of Fame coach, Jacob Brown’s Girls’ Cross Country & Track website, is a notable exception to this observation.)
Countless organizations in Ridgewood are associated with particular sports, some are affiliated with the public schools and others are dedicated non-profits. A tip of the hat to all of them for recognizing the value which team sports have in building character in young people.
Though their is one unfortunate flaw that they they all share in common: an abandonment of their sport’s history. Take a look at any on these well-meaning websites, and you’ll find there are no mentions of their own storied pasts. They might include some group photos, but in most cases there’s not even a tepid appreciation of all the athletes, coaches, and athletic contests which came before.
The good news is that there is a solution on the horizon, The Arrow Project. This collaboration between RHS and the Ridgewood Public Library aims to put all the Arrow Yearbooks & Literary Magazines online in one website. The Arrow Project will simultaneously work to enlighten people through the pictures and words contained in our past and give all athletic teams a curated presentation of all the athletes who played their sport before them.
Over time we’ll curate the pictures from these yearbooks to encourage reflection on the accomplishments of all the clubs, activities, and would-be journalists, dating back over 100 years. We’ll add narration where appropriate to offer a deeper understanding of what it was like for girls trying to organize a basketball team in the 1920s; boys playing football in leather helmets; boys & girls who competed in Track & Field on a cinder track, designed originally for horses.
We’ll also present the best of the poetry, prose & artwork from the Yearbooks.
Details to follow shortly. Your suggestions and comments are most welcome!

The Mercy of Santa Catalina
Day two of my visit and I'm already on my knees at church begging for mercy - the good news...as I crawled...I saw my friend @yesenialinares at the door with a forgiving smile - at least I know where to come tomorrow for day three penance.

Made out of solid brass, they are designed to last. We don't put lacquer on them so that they can develop a patina over time.
