The Ridgewood Public Library
Our Village Library will need more than cosmetic changes to the 1st and third floors in the coming years. I have no doubt these worthy improvements outlined in plans recently made public are justified. Though the library also needs a new mindset. One that involves spreading the word of its activities and collections, and not one where patrons have to live in the confines of Ridgewood to enjoy the library’s munificence.
I suggest one new program: The Arrow Project. It involves the digitization of all Ridgewood High School Arrow Yearbooks & Literary Magazines dating back more than 100 years ago. The library has already begun this process and Ridgewood High School has a vast trove of artifacts still to be digitized.
This new collaboration will include a new website. RHS Alumni from around the world would be the most likely first visitors. It will give the library a potential fund raising boast as well as a notoriety for taking on projects of a depth and breadth which few other try. It would further demonstrate the Village of Ridgewood is populated by a civic-minded people who prioritize the preservation of its artifacts & collections, especially those which capture the essence of the 20th century.

El Caballo Fantasma de Cartagena
Nothing like the sound of horses walking on cobble stone - in a strange way... the sound is all to familiar as if we have heard the clickity clack many times over the many of our previous existences be it as a cat or a farmer or in my case...a sunset
This is a pure reflection shot on March 2nd looking east on Carrera 5 at Calle 38 as the horse turns and walks towards the setting sun.
Time 545pm.

Did You Know…
Spring Forward
By Dr. Anne Robinson
Did you know that the first of these articles was sent out exactly a year ago discussing the health and safety consequences of moving the clocks forward an hour every year? In that article, I addressed the role of sleep deprivation in the alarming rates of car crashes in our adolescent population. Spring forward a year and Ridgewood has made a change that is sure to bring those rates down in our community as school start time at RHS "springs forward" in the 2023-2024 academic year!
Jeff Nyhuis and I gave a presentation at the February 6th BOE meeting and at the February 13th meeting, the BOE voted to change the start time at RHS to 8:20 with an end time of 3:05. Period 9 will still be available to students who want one-on-one time with their teachers until 3:30. This change, which will go into effect in September, will have a positive impact on student health, mental wellness, safety, academic achievement, athletic performance, and the culture of the entire school. Congratulations to Ridgewood as we spring forward to join the ranks of NJ schools like Princeton, Chatham, and Tenafly on the cutting edge of progress.
Once again, I would like to thank Dr. Fitts for his leadership in making this decision a priority and the BOE trustees who advocated for the change. This would never have been possible without the tireless work of Jeff Nyhuis and our Smart Balance team, our HSAs, REA President, Mike Yannone, and the support of the teachers and administrators at RHS. We are so thankful for the help and support of the League of Women Voters who played a critical role in educating the community on this topic. A special thank you to Paul McCubbin, RHS class of '77, founder of Maroons Online, for his fervent support as he followed this initiative in his ezine, The Maroon. Most importantly, this was a perfect example of students becoming their own best advocates as years of student advisory groups dating back to 2009, and more recently, the student group founded by Jenna Benson, RHS class of '23, spoke up about the science, research, and data supporting this change.
I would like to close by thanking all of you who have shared your inbox with me this past year. Through your support of this initiative, your emails, phone calls, zoom meetings, and comments at HSA and BOE meetings, you have been a part of making history not only in Ridgewood but across the country. Your advocacy added a pivotal brick in building a society that respects and values the most basic health requirements of our youth population with the understanding that by protecting and strengthening student health and well-being we optimize the potential of every student.
With much gratitude,
Anne

You think you're tired of winter? Just be glad you're not Jenni's concrete garden duck. This duck isn't sitting on the ground. He's sitting on a 2 1/2 foot high pedestal. They're calling for another 6+ inches of snow for tonight through Monday, so come Monday night this duck might be a goner.
