What To Do With Zabriskie-Schedler?
The question on the minds of a great many Village residents is what to do with the Zabriskie-Schedler property. The current Village Council has made this a top priority and will no doubt be remembered as the Council which provided the solution everybody could live with.
I suggest that with the building nearly renovated and with bathrooms compliant with ADA Standards for Accessible Design soon to follow, that the debate on Athletic Fields be set aside for the time being. Let’s focus on what to do with the building with the historic designation from the State of New Jersey.
I suggest we utilize the building as a Museum of Modern Ridgewood history. The 20th century saw enormous changes and growth in Ridgewood, much of it thankfully captured in pictures and words. I say we empty out all the closets in all the schools, municipal buildings, and people’s attics to see what we have. A professional would no doubt have to be hired for the design, but maybe only after we’ve collected the first round of artifacts.
Once the first iteration of the Museum is completed, it would be a natural field trip destination for every class in every school at Ridgewood. Maybe have a section for our friends in surrounding communities which have in previous years sent their young minds to be educated at RHS, like Hohokus, Glen Rock & Midland Park.
As for the surrounding property, I suggest we devote it to plantings of trees, bushes, and flowers native to New Jersey. We’d include informational signage for all the new plantings and some walking paths & benches. Leave the rest untouched.
If I miss my guess and nobody visits the museum or cares to learn about native New Jersey plants, then we could quickly empty the museum and Astroturf the property for athletic fields. My suggestion is a good first try at making use of the Albatross which the Zabriskie-Schedler property has been these past 12 years.
Frankly, I don’t think I’m wrong about the potential interest in recent Ridgewood History and would like to hear our Village Council consider this new proposal and make their own suggestions as to how it might be implemented. At minimum, it deserves their learned attention & public comments.

Us Against The World
Took a long walk with my friend @matthewfrohling today and as we approached the Unisphere...there was a group practicing tai chi - I waited and shot this.

Tales From The Wood…
Saw this a few weeks ago and I had to stop and laugh. I hate to sound like an "old fogey", as if using that term isn't suspect enough.. but there is no way you'd see COCAINE BEAR on Ridgewood Ave when I was kid..

Photographs & Memories
This week I attended a fundraiser for Saint Baldrick's Foundation - a nonprofit that raises money for children's cancer - at MacMurphy’s. What an amazing event. Hosted by Ridgewood EMS, Fire and Police - dozens of Ridgewood’s Best, Bravest and Finest - shaved their heads to raise money for this incredibly underfunded and critical need. Shown below is Ridgewood Fire Chief John Judge (RHS 1999) as he gives his all for all our children. I was honored to be part of this great event. —Mayor Paul Vagianos

Around The Village
The Ridgewood Central Business District Advisory Committee is working on a project now to have an artist design a mural for the pedestrian underpass. Thirty artists replied to our request for proposal. Rossi Paints on Chestnut Street has offered to supply all the paint and brushes. We are very excited and hope to install the artwork this year. William, you can come and sing at the opening ceremony.
