When Local News Reigned
Newspapers have largely disappeared from our lives and along with them well composed accounts of local athletics and athletic history. It now falls to groups like the RHS Athletic Hall Of Fame to analyze the athletes. The most distinguished join the pantheon which lines the walls of the RHS Gymnasium.
The Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall Of Fame inducted two local newspaper reporters in 2008. Jim Jones and Jamie Roberts wrote respectful, highly-serious stories about the athletic events of Bergen County. Jim Jones also served on the RHS Athletic Hall Of Fame Committee and provided the group with archival quality remembrances of the athletes he had seen.
I imagine that local news coverage by local commentators will oneday return to towns and villages which can afford them. A news organization is an expensive proposition, though less than the costs imposed upon a community which has no shared, local voice.

Cab on Cab
I walk out of Central Park at 72nd street and the yellow glow of a vintage Checker cab catches my eye and before it could pull away down 5th ave...I ran across the street and shot this in his hubcap as an oncoming cab approached the downtown light - "hey...I'm walking here" (yes...that's mandatory copy for all things NY cab related).
FYI - the MCC on the hubcaps stands for Marathon Checker Cabs
Shot looking east with westerly reflection with cab, halal food truck, Central Park and clouds in distance.

Tales From The Wood…
It's okay that we disagree about things. We can talk it out or move on...
I'm sorry.. I don't know everything. I don't know why they cut down that tree... But it's been there my whole life I can't applaud it's demise... Nothing can replace it.. well.. maybe a fountain would be cool, but.. I digress.
THIS is what makes me happy and I won't apologize for it... and I'll bitch about people tearing down trees because that's what I feel in my heart.
Go ahead.. build a $4 Million house on .75 acre lot.
But do you have to....?
Whatever. I'm keeping my trees as long as I can.

Hope Coach
It’s a funny thing how coaching works !
The more you give the more you get !
After the kids were injured and things in our life became out of control, what we realized was that our energy and enthusiasm and effort was still in our control.
Our teams were not always the tallest!
We often were not the genetically gifted.
But
No one out hustled us !
Every kid who would not give up on the floor was giving me the gift of don’t give up coach !
Every sprint was a symbol of effort beyond what seems possible.
Everyday I got a chance to inspire my gang to go beyond and act as if a miracle could happen in our game!
I’m not sure if every player knew what they were giving their coach.
Hope is a powerful elixir that can overcome fear and self doubt.
Today regardless of the externals that are out of your control.
You control your energy enthusiasm effort and level of gratitude.
Maybe whether the score ends up +3 or -6
The win comes from your efforts!
Everyday is game day !!

Rock Hound
Sumacs along Big Eddy Road. I love the contrast of the dark green leaves and the rich, reddish brown bobs this time of year. I've been reading about making tea from the bobs, and I might try that later in the season when the bobs are ripe.
A friend gave me some wild chanterelle mushrooms yesterday and I sautéed them in butter last night and seasoned them and ate them on Ritz crackers. I may have to reconsider my lifelong habit of hating mushrooms. Those chanterelles were exquisite. Harvesting and consuming wild edibles may become a new hobby
RHS Band Alumni
100th Anniversary Event

Another documentary will be coming out soon (includes the July 4 interviews that many of you did), as well as a picture/slideshow history of the RHS Band Program! Be on the look out for those 2 things over the next few weeks.
