Pedestrian Plaza Hiatus
The Ridgewood Village Council did their job well at the last meeting. They cut their losses on the Downtown Pedestrian Plaza by cancelling August activities. It will hopefully return in the Autumn.
The idea of a Pedestrian Plaza is brilliant, though it appears to need some fresh strategy & tactics. Everyone agrees that a Pedestrian Plaza gives The Village an opportunity to shine. The current break is a good moment to consider whether another local organization, or even a multinational corporation, can help fill the Village Downtown in Summer, 2024.
This is not intended as criticism or original thinking. Though I propose beginning by answering these questions: What is the Pedestrian Plaza aiming to look like and why ought people visit?
In 2024 to help a future Ridgewood Pedestrian Plaza, address this retailers’ concern:
What kind of unified Social Media campaign is going to be launched to publicize the Pedestrian Plaza?

Paul Cortellesi:
A Working Lunch
Between the weather and the Day Job, my lunches lately have been microwaved leftovers - but not today.
Mason has been tending his garden and left me a bounty as an outline for a meal. Cherry tomatoes, a cucumber (saved for a suppertime lobster roll), and a jalapeño. Looking about the larder, I found garlic, fresh thyme, a few shrimp, and a can of chickpeas.
Start a pan on low, add in a glug of olive oil, the sliced garlic and let it go while you slice the cherry tomatoes in half and seed/chop the jalapeño. Once the tomatoes have reduced a bit, add in a mostly drained can of chickpeas, use you judgement here as the tomatoes will release a lot of juice, I tend to use fluid in the can instead of added salt. Let this all warm up and then add in the shrimp. If fresh (preferred) let them color in the pan, otherwise let them warm up and you are done.
Many thanks for the inspiration!!

Important update on the Pedestrian Plaza:
With overwhelming support from our community, the Ridgewood Village Council brought back dining corrals, year-round outdoor dining and the pedestrian plaza this summer.
Initially, the response to the pedestrian plaza was very good, with many people coming out to support it. Most importantly, it was well received by the community and our businesses.
After school let out in June, and the hotter summer months upon us, combined with record travel numbers across the country - we saw foot traffic fade in the CBD. This is consistent with what is happening in other towns in the area.
As a result, we have decided to suspend the pedestrian plaza for the month of August and will re-evaluate bringing it back after Labor Day, with input from our residents and the business community. Please be aware that the dining corral program and year-round outdoor dining will continue, as will events, activities and concerts in Van Neste Square.
It has been and will continue to be our goal to attract additional patrons to downtown Ridgewood.

The adventurous spirit of Ridgewood residents Charles and Gladys Healy Day, pictured here in June 1931 about to take off on an epic trip from England to China in the Errant, an airplane designed by Charles and built by both in a Paterson garage. Charles was a prominent aeronautical engineer inducted into the @njaviationhalloffame His many designs included the Standard J-1 used for training pilots in WWI, mail transport, and barnstorming in the 1920s. The husband-and-wife co-pilots made about thirty stops, including Aleppo, Jerusalem, Baghdad, and a forced landing in the Bay of Bengal, Burma. This print in our archive is an Associated Press photo taken in Heston, England before their initial flight. Upon their return to their residence on 600 West Ridgewood Ave, the Village of Ridgewood planned a testimonial dinner in their honor. For more images, visit our Heritage CATalog
