RHS HOF 2024 Nominations Due Soon!
Time once again for RHS Athletic Hall Of Fame nominations.
You might consult your Arrow Yearbook and/or the list of Dave Vanderbush Award Recipients: https://maroonsonline.com/dave-vanderbush-award/ to refresh your memory about athletes you have seen compete or competed against.
The Dave Vanderbush Award is given yearly to the best RHS boy & girl athletes.
The Maroon Sports Editor nominated Richard Flechtner, class of 1947, to be named a 2024 Inductee. Modesty prevents us from offering more than one candidate.
Though if this were not a consideration, these four would certainly get the nod:
Rick Hartung, 1972
Cathy Deyoe, 1975
Cathy Kraft, 1977
Michael Thurston, 2016

Greene Street Ripple
As I walk up Greene street I notice a huge puddle nestled comfortably on a bed of like 100 cobble stone and as I got closer...I could see the wind gently pushing the water over the 1st row of stones...I could hear the sound of the water flapping ever so softly and so I kneeled down to get a better listen and took this as the NYU students make their way to class.
This is mostly a pure reflection shot on Greene street just south of Washington place looking north.

Tales From The Wood…
This structure was mid-block closer to Franklin Avenue. Many people remember the bowling alley on Maple Avenue. My Dad was a pin setter at the bowling alley there before child labor laws. Lucky he didn't lose a hand!

Growing Up in the 1960 & 1970s
Saturday Mornings
Jeff Yearing, RHS 1966:
Great Saturdays growing up on Sterling Place off of Glen Avenue. Our Street was loaded with friends many who continued lifelong, with my BFF Ken Ruhl being the best man in my wedding in 1971. We have remained in contact through all of the years.
Our street was a constant playground dawn to dusk. We lived in the street playing all sorts of games. I lived next to John Orr the police chief and had the honor of hitting a terrific line drive through his front window, a classic story. Of course, an apology and a payment plan was in order. I think I stopped paying after four weeks of shelling out a quarer.
The little store (Gills) was a haven for goodies. We would spend our summer days later at Graydon Pool. Little did I know I would end up working there for nearly forty years.
Little league baseball with Ken and I always comparing stats, following the Yankees, backyard sleep outs under the stars, building clubhouses out of any scrap wood we could find, shoveling walks for money in the winter, Rec basketball as well as YMCA Ball later.
Eating meals at neighbors houses, kids eating meals at our house.
So much more , but suffice it to say it was, a great way to grow up. Classic games between the Sterling Colts and Kensington somethings.Ha!
Long live the Grellvin who tragically lost his life on an outdoor expedition in the Adirondacks. Not to mention Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts etc.
Just scratched the surface and wouldn't want it any other way. By the way, the Lone Ranger, Rin Tin Tin , Hop Along Cassidy, The Cisco Kid, Andy Devine, Roy Rogers, and Sky King were my staples on TV, along with the Merry Melodies, Tom & Jerry, Disney cartoons etc.

Three different perspectives of the North Pier Lighthouse at the entrance to the Sturgeon Bay Shipping Canal. This light is no longer in operation and in 2014 it was purchased by a private party for $50,000.
