RHS: Lose The Turf!
As another Ridgewood High School artificial turf athletic field succumbs to the ravages of the latest series of storms, we must remind ourselves that the Football field has always been in the designated Flood Plain.
When heavy storms flooded the grass field, we waited for the water to recede. Now we wait for the next available time for a crew to eremove & install a new turf field. They ought to be busy, given the recent rains in NJ, and very expensive.
The real question is how many times will this field need to be replaced in the future and at what cost?
With all due respect to current Head Football Coach & RHS Alum Torre Watson, & former Head Coach & alum Chuck Johnson, RHS needs to end the charade that turf cost less than grass. The costs of removing the old turf and installing a new one are staggering in comparison to spreading grass seed. When did the football budget become so sacred that it automatically receives whatever it wants?
As a former athlete who competed on grass, cinders, and a variety of turf fields, my impression is that turf is hard, like playing on concrete. Turf fields have recently received plenty of press coverage about increases in CET injuries, a neuro-degenerative disease linked to repeated trauma to the head.
One more observation: Why do the girls play Flag-Football and boys play Tackle? This does not seem in the spirit of Title IX which mandates equal funding for boys & girls sports.

My breakfast today was a cup of coffee and a hotdog - there really is no turning back.

Tales From The Wood…
"RHS Turf football field. Look closely. It's now 2 bubble mounds because of the flooding rain. How much more money are they gonna waste replacing it? Again."

Our lighter weight textiles are made in southern India, in Kerala. This is Shobha working on a wooden handloom in an open air environment that is covered. You can see how lush and tropical the setting is.

Around The Village
According to Village Manager, Keith Kazmark, the Summer of 2023, and post Labor Day, the Village of Ridgewood worked to re-surface a significant number of roads in partnership with the County of Bergen and PSE&G. These efforts will continue into the fall and in 2024! Keith made this very effective video describing the work.
