Reinventing Downtown Ridgewood
In civic discussions around the reinvention of a downtown the size of Ridgewood, the focus usually begins with a study on available parking and what might encourage more foot traffic. Both of these touchstones are valuable indicators of progress, or the lack thereof.
I suggest the term “foot traffic” be expanded to include visitors to Ridgewood from the Internet. Traffic from the Internet would not replace the time-tested measures that rely on our eyes, but including this data in discussions about reinvention is a practical consideration.
This is not a blank check endorsement for adding more data collection to our lives. We hardly have time to analyse the data we encounter everyday.
I believe a reinvention begins in people’s minds, and concerns itself with things that we see and then want to talk about. How about generating more foot traffic with the establishment of a locally owned Ridgewood Robot Shop. It’s not a coincidence that the Ridgewood Cycle Shop has been in business since the 1920s, and has always had a close proximity to the Ridgewood Train Station. My imagined Ridgewood Robot Shop would have a humble store front, hopefully near the transit friendly parts of town. It would pay homage to technology, along with providing a healthy dose of skepticism.

Tower Of Power And Goosebumps
A chance encounter with some Italian tourists brought me to the bridge this morning - i stood on the east end of the bridge snd had goosebumps looking across the horizon - New York is a city of opportunity - get up...get out and find your opportunity (and goosebumps).
Shot looking west from the east side of the east tower with One World Trade Center in distance.
